Can anyone suggest an appropriate helmet for regular use on the road between £30-50. Is it worth going to Halfords?

Sorry, I know nothing about anything Road Bike related, but in response to:

No, never, in fact since I found a proper bike shop that's open on a Sunday, I never set foot in the place.

Any "branded" helmet that conforms to the SNELL or ANSI spec is good enough. I don't think the BS spec (kitemark)is used anymore, in any case it was woefully inadequate.

Fitting is important. Make sure there is enough room for a hat/bandana, etc underneath.

I tried on a few in my LBS - found something that I liked and ended up buying online in the end (I don't like doing this but it saved me about £45!!). My budget was originally the same as yours but I eventually went for a MET ultimalight (pretty sure that's it's name tongue out) and paid the extra £30/£40, it should last me a long time and is so nice to wear that I wear it on every ride rather than just saying "it's not far" or "I won't be anywhere near cars" etc etc - well worth the extra money!

Thanks. You hear people saying that if a helmet is even dropped then it destroys its absorbtion properties. With this in mind I don't want to spend much more than £40 so that I'm not wasting my money - though it could be a scandal by the producers?!
