The Megavalanche 2009 Wiki
Discussion
Herein you should find all the info on the Megavalanche, who's going, where to sign up etc...
What is the Megavalanche
Essentially this - last year, 1800 loons trying to kill eachother to get from the top of the Pic Blanc to the bottom of the valley and Allemont. Riders may use any means available, providing you either stay on the course, don't push someone off, or get caught doing either of the previous two.
You also get the most delicious (at least it seems like it afterwards) food in Allemont at the end of the race. If you are still alive and made it down.
Website
www.megavalanche.com (admittedly fecking confusing)
Where do I sign up?
www.activeeurope.com - sign up, and search for Saab Solomon Megavalanche in July
What do I need to race
You need to enter, and sign up for one of the packages. The Platinum package is the best, allowing you to race the Sprint Oz DH race - a World Cup course of years gone by. The others give you entry plus the lift passes for the week.
You will need a doctors note to hand in, as they do ask, and no note = no race.
Also ensure you have health insurance and insurance that covers airlift off mountains in OFF PISTE scenarios.
What bike do I need?
Any bike can be used (and I've seen a few odd choices) however the best would be a 140mm travel FR bike for the race itself, and a heavier FR/DH bike for the qualifier. I understand many will take one bike, and if so, take the lighter FR bike and beef it up with Dual ply tyres and assorted other Alps riding type tricks.
Where is it?
Alpe D'Huez
Where should I stay?
You should consider getting accomodation at the TOP of the village (as the walk up is a f
ker every day) OR consider Oz D'Oisans as this is quieter (and not much goes on at night anyway) and possibly cheaper. You also get the benefit of being in the right place on the race days for the lifts (trust me, it'll save you at least an hour of queueing on the race day).
You can also camp, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Is it likely to be the scariest thing I have ever done?
Yes.
Will I crash?
Yes.
Will I break any bones or end up with permanent scarring?
Quite possibly yes. Especially if you travel/ride in Neils group. Be warned.
Who from PH is going?
