Well more precisely Prestwich:

If it happens its great - I ride around there all the time, there is massive scope for some excellent trails through the woods and valleys.

heh, that's Fletcher's canal heading east to Pilkingtons and Clifton Aqueduct. Along my regular route smile

I hate that little bridge, my handlebars barely fit through it so I usually have to push my way through. Getting up the last bit of that brick sluice a few hundred yards back is a bh too.

POD,

You really are going to have to show me some places to ride, local to us both! The closest place I ride with any decent descending would be Rivington. Would Bury and Prestwich not be a little too flat for any gnarly stuff?

The trail around there isn't really 'gnarly', its just a good solid nice ride with plenty of interesting things. Fletcher's Canal (picture above) has loads of decent slippery little bits that can if you're not paying attention send you flying into the trees smile The elevation profile of our ride isn't anywhere near as tall as Winter Hill, its probably only a 1/5 of that. Its a good trail though, muddy canal towpath, cobbles, a mile long section riding on 12-inch wide coping stones with the (in water) canal to your left and a 6 inch drop into thick mud on your right (great for testing your balance), some windy twisty wide dirt paths through wooded sections, Fletcher's Canal which is quite technical in parts, steep climbs up Philips Park, a nice descent down slippery slopes, a nice fast twisty section of gravelled path (no banks unfortunately), followed by a 1.5-2 mile slog up an incline along the course of an old railway.

There aren't really any good downhill bits, but there are plenty of pretty steep climbs that you can have fun coming back down, and some rather steep hills that you'd be a plain mentalist to try - hills that motocross bikes usually come upsmile

Me any my mate are out on Saturday afternoon showing a bloke from Manchester Mountainbikers our usual route around there, if you're interested you can come too, we start in Radcliffe. smile Sunday I think we're off to Coed Y Brenin.

POD i must have said hello to you at some point along my travels as that is my local riding spot and i am out every w/end.

i go from drinkwater up to the viaduct over the footbridge up the railway cutting past the old station platform and on to the road were i had back to ringley down a v steep entry and pick up the bury tail of the canal then follow it back to clifton country park at giants seat then take the singletrack route on the river side of c,c,park heading back to the aquaduct crossing and along the tow path back to lumns lane our whichever way i choose to go home. (i live at the top of agecroft)

i wish they would sort out the quagmire that is the path between the aquaduct and the refurbed tow paths (salford side)

Probably the best place to go Mountain biking within thirty miles of Manchester are the quarries around Lee Mill, Stacksteads and Whitworth (Rochdale)...

You can literally go for miles, with varied terrain, stunning scenery too....

I know exactly where you mean, I cycle on those paths regularly. What you should do instead of heading off the railway at Ringley Road Station is continue until you get to a big tall block of stone on the left (just past the platform). Turn left there, straight across, and down a fast swooping bit of path to a bridge over the Irwell. Cross the bridge, turn left, down the (v quiet) road a bit, just before the mill gates turn right up the hill and onto the canal. Turn left along the canal, get to Nob End locks, turn left there, over Prestolee Aqueduct, that'll bring you out to Ringley Road, turn left and right and you're in Ringley Village where you can pick your trail up again.

The bit of singletrack is actually Fletcher's Canal which takes you past Pilkingtons. The aqueduct is Clifton Aqueduct.

If you see a bloke with a blue top, black shorts, white Commencal bike, ginger hair, thats me smile

Theres a really nice long steep track leading to a fast flowing wide track, go to the petrol station at J17 on the motorway, down the side of that. Its great but watch out for roots smile It takes you down to the back of Philips Park, just near the Viaduct.

i have taken that route down to the bridge before but i didnt have a OS map at the time so i didnt cross the bridge, what we did was turned left before the bridge and cut over the fields and rode by the res and ended up back at the road that cuts across the the the railway cutting.

in the summer i intend on going all the way up into bury following the canal just to see where it finishes.

i have read up on the canals as i used to walk down them with my dad when i was a kid, i have never heard the name "fletchers" tho!, its a shame they are in such a state.

i will let on if i see you, i will probably be wearing a black jacket and grey pants on a matt black claud butler.
