Orange, I've no experience of the bikes as to their ride quality , but I don't like how they've not really moved the game on, rather, refining rather outdated (but admittedly sucessful) designs.
Commencal 666 or Meta 6, now everyone knows that I love my Commencals, but I'm afraid that the weight penalty of these two bikes puts me off them: the 666 is unashamedly an FR bike, and the Meta 6, well, it doesn't know what it wants to be - its too heavy as a long travel XC bike, and not quite hard enough to take day in, day out punishment in the Alps.
Lapierre, ahhhhh, Lapierre, my new toy (when I get it at the end of the month) - what more can I say about the Spicy than: I've brought one without riding it - I know its going to be fun, and that Nico rides one. Nuff said I think.
Technically, the Lapierre is streets ahead of the Orange and Commencal, the design is very well thought out, some VERY clever touches (I mean, carbon fibre rear mech guard - how cool is that) and you just ache looking at them.
Consider too: Lapierre Froggy's if you want a FR bike - I've not seen many reviews, but what I have heard is very good.

My local shop(cycle centre in Congleton)stocks Lapierre and Orange.I agree with you Neil about Orange not really moving on.I'm not into doing loads of tests mainley because I just confuse myself as to which is better than the other.Lapierre is ahead at the moment, the Froggy would be overkill for me as I'm into longer more technical rides rather than big drop offs and near death experiences
Staying with Gary Fisher, the Roscoe seems to be getting a good reputation in the MTB press at the moment.
If you're spending less than £3k though, something like a Giant Reign or Reign X is a good budget alternative. Brilliant suspension system.
I really like the look of the Lapierre's though
