Basically get yourself to Nevis Range and have a play. I've only ever seen the downhill course from the gondola, and frankly I have no particular wish to try it. Your opinion may differ, however I would say you'll struggle on a hardtail no matter how good you are!
There's plenty of other trails to have a go at though and they're spending money like crazy to establish the place as a world-class biking venue.

Neil - why wait with interest?
You can hire all manner of bikes at the DH centre. I'd booked a DH bike to have a play on the DH course, the year the bloody gondola fell off so the up-lift was shut.
Instead I hired a Spesh enduro and did a couple of laps of the WC XC course (which I wouldn't want to do on a skinny tired carbon HT - it's an old school XC course) and then pushed up the last section of the DH course for a play - that last drop is very very high and very very steep. Then spent the afternoon wandering up the Ben. 'Twas a good day.
The centre rents all sorts of bikes from DH full bouncers to kiddies bikes. Enjoy!

Nice video of Greg Minnaar doing the track with voice too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9ARlglIUTE
It works out to be a run of roughly 5.30, which is pretty damn quick, but to commentate all the way down & having a laugh is pretty scary
But then he is one of the best riders in the world!

Blimey, I've never seen the track all the way down, and I've revaluated my impression of the course - its bllody scary looking: I can't wait to get up there and try it!It works out to be a run of roughly 5.30, which is pretty damn quick, but to commentate all the way down & having a laugh is pretty scary

ETA: Looking at a road trip up at some point - hence the interest.

Funnily enough, its not very scary at all!ETA: Looking at a road trip up at some point - hence the interest.
Compared to some of the lesser used non motorway Alpine tracks, its a doddle from that perspective. However, its rough. Like, really rough. It's such a physical track & pummels you all the way down. After a day there I was exhausted, I think I only did 9 runs too!
Definately worth riding though, and humbling too. On the ragged edge I was comfortably over a minute slower on my best run than the top guys
