As it was dry when i got home from work last night, decided to take my usual 10mile trip on the pushbike to try and get a bit fitter. Now bear in mind that when i was 17, i could run the 100m in just over 11 seconds, i used to be pretty fit but now i'm 39 and have put on about 3 stones extra i feel like an OAP!

when i ride the bike, after a short while or going uphill in get a burning feeling in my knees and my legs feel like they are wobbly!! is this lactic acid?

i'm going to try and do as much on the bike as possible, but is there anything i need to take to help? such as vitamins or minerals?

I was a sprinter in my teens, running in school / county stuff. But sprinting and cycling are totally different muscle and fitness tests. Not sure what your knee prob is, doubt it is lactic acid though.

Not to sure whats up with your knees sorry. But I can add that mine are fked!

I used to ride BMX pretty much everyday for about 5 years. Iv always been quite well built. Iv had to go back and forwards to the docs for the past couple of years as my knee caps are twisted. My muscles on the outside of my legs are stronger than the insde so pull my knww harder. I used to suffer from similar pains to yourself so possibly the same thing. Although my knees also go into agonising cramp and occasionaly give way. So doesnt seem anywhere as bad as mine.

ETA im only 18 so mine have been quite drastic.

Have you cycled much lately, or are you new to the activity? If so, just keep cycling more regularly and the fire will go away.

It's probably just because you're new to it. I get a burining feeling just my knee cap on really long rides (6 hours charity xc stuff).

If you're worried about joints fish oil tablets are great. They cost next to nothing £6 for 6 weeks supply and will get all your bones moving about like you're 17 again, certainly did for me and I'm 31 now.

For some reason they also give my a pretty sunny disposition, I don't know why, perhaps my diet was just cronically low in omega 3 before or something. I take 3 a day, 1000mgs each.

Celt, your're not a bodyboarder are you?

Reason I ask is that I suffered from a very similar problem when I was younger. Turned out to be the bodyboard flippers that I'd used for a couple of years were biassed to the outside of my foot, hence building up all the muscle down the outside of my legs.

Even if it's not bodyboarding related, a decent physio should be able to give you a specific exercise just to strengthen the inner muscles around your knees.

Nope I am not. Yeh iv had physio sort of on and off and iv got another appointment on the NHS for 12 weeks away but im going to look into a good sports physio privately. Cos it not much fun. I cant sit in a car for to long without full stretching out my leg.

R1-Jay, apologies if this has already been suggested - I only scan read all the replies.

Are you sure you're seat is at the right height for you? Your leg at the bottom of the rotation should be almost but not quite straight, so you knees shouldn't lock out when riding, and your hips shouldn't move side to side.

If your seat is too high, or too low, this won't do your knees any good.

Apologies if this is really obvious and you've sorted it, just thought I'd suggest an alternative to the likely problem, which is probably that your leg muscles just aren't used to the riding yet!

If it's the muscles then it could be, if it's the knee joint itself then it's not. Either way you can expect all sorts of aches and pains when you start a new form of exercise, no matter how fit you were two decades ago wink

Skip the physio and get a sports massage: specifically deep friction massage of the Illio-tibial bands. If that doesn't fix it, then see a sports physio privately.
