Lol, no I havent had an easter egg yet!!! But the bike has shall we say been used. Ive had it 7 years so figured it doesnt really owe me anything, but we have had some good times together and some good descents so it will be a shame to see it go!
Not sure it is an odd place to break, I can sort of understand it, the force from the calliper has been channelled to the front of the gusset which has been welded on presumably to strengthen the seat stay. However, it has put all the stress on an area that isnt perhaps as strong as it could be due to the welding process and the fact that it is half way along the stay. I have emailed specialized on the off chance but wont really hold anything against them if they tell me to get stuffed....

Luckily it happened on a bit of fire road almost at the very end of the penmachno trail. If it had happened half an hour earlier it would have been a very long walk or worse, a trip in a helicopter!!! As it was I stayed on as the back wheel skewed sideways and locked up with a bit of space around me. I think it probably went on the rough bit of singletrack that I had previously descended at approx 30 leptons and then gave up totally on a stupid little bump that I probably didnt even see.

Anyway, meant I had to hire one of these the next day...

which was, well how can i put it other than f*cking awesome around coed-y-brenin. Just trying to figure out if I sell everything including the cat will that get me enough cash to buy one?

That's nasty Chris! I agree, that Trek is bike porn. I've been wondering what I would need to sell to buy one too!

Nasty!

But gives a great excuse for a new bike/frame, and that Trek (Remedy 7?) looks very lush. Lyriks are a brilliant fork too, just too flush for my budget.

Oh, I thought it was a Trek Fuel. I want the white and black Trek Fuel Ex whatever it is. Pay day is about upon me for last years purchase on finance so maybe I should treat myself?!

yep its an 09 remedy 7 and it was indeed porn.
I would settle for last years model if I could find one, but somewhat typically all I can find in last years model is at Leisure lakes for a reduced price but they only have it in stoopid small or bloody massive sizes. I guess I need the most common size and they are sold out. So if anyone does any trawling and finds any 08 remedys in 17.5 or 19.5 pls let me know. Ive looked everywhere.
Otherwise it might be a fuel, or take a trip round some of the local bike shops and see if they have any sensible p/exs in at the moment. Need a new bike as we want to go back to Wales sometime soonish and I dont think the damage to the stumpy will buff out this time.....

Oh and I have had a reply from specialized. The damage to my frame wouldnt be covered under their ahem "lifetime" frame warranty.
A quick heads up for anyone that owns a Specialized full sus - the lifetime frame warranty only applies if you are the original owner of the bike, and the seatstays and chainstays are only covered for 5 years so the lifetime warranty doesnt seem quite as useful as it may first appear...

Hmm, interesting one that - I've got a Spesh FSR xc. Still, I don't suppose I'll still own it in another 3 1/2 yrs anyway, so the warranty won't bother me then.

Can you not get a replacement rear triangle for it? (Nah, don't bother actually, just buy that Trek!cool)

You could try fixing it:

You could try BETD, they used to produce new, upgraded seat stays (although you can probably buy a second hand FSR frame for less). It may be throwing good money after bad, but at least it would let you hold off buying until the end of the season (I'm after a new AM 150mm travel FS, like everyone else seems to be at the moment!), the exchange rate may even improve.

I've got a 2006 Stumpy FSR and as far as I'm aware, the warranty should be lifetime so long as you owned the bike from new......(although they do specify it as "limited warranty...." whatever that means... rolleyes

[bike shop employee mode on] Clearly neither of you have read your manuals then![off]

Its all in there regarding the warranty - Speciliazed are VERY good at sorting people out, but, if your not even the original owner, thats pushing it a bit.

Limited means exactly that - as you long as your within the limits defined in the manual. Which you should have read. :P

The Remdy is verrry nice, had a quick sit on one.

I have read the warranty and while I admit, yes, I was trying it on and fully expected the response I got, it does seem like just a bit of a con. Regardless of whether I was the original owner or not, ignore that part, to say it is a lifetime warranty (with the caveat of being limited) and then excluding the main moving parts from the frame, seems a little bit of a play on words..... i.e. it sounds a lot better than it is. I bet in their advertising they use the words limited lifetime frame warranty, and I bet the lifetime bit has sucked a few people in without reading the small print!
Trek also have a lifetime warranty on frames and I have read that too and it doesnt seem to mention anything about excluding half of the frame in their warranties - or have I missed that bit?

Surely a lifetime frame warranty should be valid for the life of a frame, the only problem with that being that as soon as it snapped it was no longer alive and was no longer covered lol......

Chris - Yup, warranties generally suck balls.

But from experience, Specalized ARE very good. If you had been the original owner, I would imagine they would have offered you some sort of recompense, whether that be a spare back end for a bargain basement price, or money off a new frame.

If it was a Specialized warranty, this is mine scanned straight from the manual.

If you were the original owner, then you should be covered as the frame carries a lifetime warranty.

I've uploaded it to mediafire and it's in PDF format, (1.42MB).

Thanks beanbag. This is the link that specialized sent me so maybe they are singing from a different hymn sheet to everyone else.....

http://cdn.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/pdf/Frame_and_...

I wonder why they are different?

Transcript of emails exchanged with specialized warranty people below:

chrisga to specialized:

"Is there a warranty on specialized bike frames? And how long would it last. I have a 2000/2001 stumpjumper fsr xc pro and snapped the seatstay on Saturday half way round Penmachno. Im guessing it wouldnt be covered by any form of warranty due to its age, but it has snapped, in my belief due to a design flaw, not misuse. Basically the caliper mounting gusset plate is welded to the seat stay to spread the load from the disc brake, however, all the force is channeled to the middle of the seat stay tube (the weakest point on any simply supported beam) and the seat stay has snapped at the end of this weld, clean in half. I can provide pictures if it helps. Have you ever had any other breakages recorded of this type?

Many thanks"

specialized to chrisga:

"Chris, I am sorry to hear of this failure, unfortunately this part is no longer covered under our warranty. Please see the link above for our full warranty policy."

chrisga to specialized:

"No problem, understand the situation. However, I am going to need to replace this bike and this doesnt do much for brand loyalty. Is there anything that can be done to sway me from buying a Trek fuel/remedy?"

specialized to chrisga:

"Chris, While this will not be covered under warranty, it can still be replaced at a cost significantly less than a new bicycle. Please see your local dealer to order the new seat stay.

Thanks again,"

chrisga to specialized:

"Understood. To trek it is then. Their "lifetime" frame guarantee doesnt appear to have any conditions relating to the age of integral parts of the frame.

Thanks again."

specialized to chrisga:

"Easy enough, best of luck."

Yes I was trying it on but hey ho in my experience if you dont ask you dont get..... I dont think they quite understood I am willing to buy a new bike, and probably because of this it won't now be a specialized, even though I loved the one I just broke and would have had no problem buying another!
