James,
You won't get anything decent new for that price. IMO your better looking second hand.
I got Sarah a Realeigh USA with Aluminium frame, Manitou shocks, bontrager wheels and a mix of XT and LW for about £120 ish if memory serves. To buy the same spec new would cost £600-700 ish.
I also got my Voodoo Wanga Singlespeed with Pace RC31 forks, midleburn cranks and juicy 7 brakes for about £400 which would probably cost about £1200 to build.
Ebay is your friend if you look for the slightly obscure stuff. I suggest you start with voodoo.
Any queries give me a shout.

as the man said, nothing sub £300 will be of much use off road, crap rims, weak components, heavy as lead etc etc so if thats the budget go second hand. ebay normally has a few steel hardtails from the major manufacturers, kona, spesh, trek etc. you will be lucky to find a voodoo though for that price though.
also try retrobike and bikeradar classified ads. at that price though you cant be too pickly but there is a lot of fun to be had on a steel hardtail with good joe murray inspired geometry!!!

You might be suprised, a lot of the ebay plebs don't know what they are so they don't get so many bids. (I am going back a couple of years here though so things may have changed).I'd also be looking at the top end halfords carerra stuff, on one and merloin malts which are all a bit away from the main stream. Also don't discount raleigh and raleigh usa who have churned out some decent bikes in the past (Dynatech anyone?)and are often considered a budget brand so not considered.

i read a good interview with someone high up at raleigh in cycyling weekly recently. cant remember teh guys title but he was really pissed off with the perception of the raleigh brand and how some dealers were letting them down. their new mtb bikes are pretty good and still under-rated. their road bikes have always been dependable.
