Which bike type - offroad/onroad

Looking to move on from my mtb and get something a bit more suited to fast 10-50 mile rides (to start). Budget £600ish.

Riding: 70% road, 30% gravelly paths, towpaths, some unmade roads (potholes, flints etc). Chilterns, so moderately hilly. Use would be fitness and travelling, I have the mtb for my (very) short commute.

I try to avoid muddy bridlepaths if I can, but sometimes this isn't always possible!

I'm assuming I want a hybrid - but not sure if I should be looking at "offroad hybrid" (eg Spec Crosstrail) or "onroad hybrid" (Spec Sirrus) or maybe even a tricross/cyclocross type?

My Scott Roadster coped fine with the firetracks in Richmond Park. That was a flat bar road bike.
