Im in the market for a new bike but its been years since i've had one. I've kind of lost touch about whats good and whats not and what kind of technology is avaliable these days.

Ive a max of £600 to spend and will be using it to go off road on the weekends and occasionally travelling to work.

Not fussed about full suspension or hardtail but would like it to be light and have disc brakes.

Dunno if this is will influence the suggestions but im touching 6'3

cheers for any suggestions in advance!

At £600 go for hardtail. Take a look at Boardman in Halfords.

also take a look at what £600 will get you form Focus, Felt or Cube. the lesser known manufacturers tend to spec bikes lightly better than the more popular brands at the moment to get a foot in the door so to speak. to many people still go for the obvious specilaized, trex or kona and i dont think the quality is there anymore to make that brand name justifiable at this prive level.
some suggestions:

if you can stretch the budget a bit, this is a top bike for the money

Trek 6000 is good. Seems pretty high quality to me:

Guy at work has a GT Aggressor:

I gotta a Trek 6700 SLR that I have just started using again (and have relegated the more expensive Full Suss Specialised to the garage for a while). Trek is a good bike.
How about an Orange? I like the P7's but they have a cheaper model....

For literally a couple of quid over budget you can get a merlin malt 1 with full deore groupset, handbuilt wheels (invaluable) and Rockshox Tora SL forks (way better than the Suntour rubbish a lot of bikes have at this price point). Nothing comes close for the money!

Another vote for Merlin here. Or one of these represents just about the best spec you will get for that money - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/genesis/core-2...

MBUK ran a £500 hardtail test and the Cube Attention was noted as great spec except for the Suntour fork. They would've given it the win if it had a better fork at that price and do recommend it if you have the cash to upgrade. Maybe this would be an option?
