So what bike do you rate the best, why and what makes it stand out from the crowd.....

Best? Best at what?

Will also depend on where you ride, how you ride and what you want to get out of riding.

What is best for me, is not for others.

Decide if you want XC, DH, 4X, tank. Then try to get some demo rides. Look at http://www.bikeradar.com/
for reviews. The demo rides will let you know if the bike mags are talking rollox, and whether they get perks for favorable reviews.

Lapierre Zesty or Spicy. Which you choose depends on the size of jumps/drops you intend on taking on!

Very pleased with my 5, plus it has the bonus of being British built!

If you just want a mountain bike to do mainly XC on, hit a few trail centres in Wales and not planning to don body armour and a full face motorcross style helmet... then you want a 5in allround bike.

Orange 5 is superb from all reviews.
Commencal Meta5 is great
Scott and Trek both make good bikes. The Trek Fuel is a good starter, Trek Remedy for slightly more travel.
Lapierre Spicy and Zesty both ace.

You can't really go wrong with any of the above. Just try a few out for size and find the one you're comfortable on.

I'll agree with all of the above: I've run both a Commencal Meta 5.5 and now a Lapierre Spicy and both are amazing bikes, with myself prefering the feel of the Spicy more.

However, my riding is quite agressive and with the Megavalanche in mind, which may be different to someone looking to ride predominantly UK trails, of which the Lapierre Zesty will suit more so.

Until Commencal lighten up the Metas (which is coming with the carbon versions) they'll not be as well regarded.

I've tried Orange 5 Pro, Zesty 514, Commencal Meta 5 and Super 4.2 and Trek EX8.

Of the 5" bikes I liked the Zesty 514 (though it broke, as it rides really nicely. The Com Super 4.2 is very nice. 4", great for trails and XC, and £1300.

I'm sticking with my '99 Kona Explosif for the immediate future, as every time I take it out, it delays me purchasing an FS - 'cos it's so good.

Turner 5 Spot. Expensive new, but secondhand you can pick up a complete bike for £1500-1800. Mine is now 4 years old and still as good as ever. Nothing's come out since that rides any better, though I use it less than my hardtails now.

They are good, and i am sure you've given yours plenty of stick over the past 4 years.... but..... rock up on a 5 spot and EVERYONE will be watching to see if you are any good or if you just have a fat wallet wink

Then i've been riding my 06 enduro home and abroad for 3 years and everyone probably thinks oh look another member of the heard on a spesh... smile

I have an 08 Marin Attack trail which I find to be good for all types of terrain, there aren't many on trails either, unlike the Ornage 5.

I'll lob in Yeti 575 - what it might lose on the descent it more than makes up for by being able to get up the hill in the first place, and its a comfortable all-day XC machine. Though it has to be said they are like sh!t in a field over here now - wouldn't be unusual to see 30 or so in a marathon race field of 600.

But, as many have said before, ride before you buy.

Can agree that the SC Blur LT is a lovely looking thing, but a lot of money.

Moon, can you give your opinion on the Landancer now you've had a quick razz on it?

After Saturdays ride, I've decided its the best bike I've ever owned - the ride is that good.

I gave up on Specialized after an 05 S-Works Enduro which had continual problems - suspension pivots kept going, and the shock died twice. It spent a lot of time in the shop, and I ended up buying an Inbred to ride to keep me going. In many ways it was a relief when the Enduro was stolen - the 5-Spot replaced it and is a hugely better bike. Nothing's needed replacing other than the BB and the usual consumables in the last 4 years and probably 3000 miles.
