Holiday Ideas Please: Road Bikes

I'm looking a couple of days (3-5) road biking on the continent with a ridding buddy.
I was thinking maybe S France, foothills of the Alps? We are looking for a mix of terrain rather than hitting monster Alpine cols each day - so Alps massif is probably out?
Any suggestions much appreciated. If its relatively straightforward to get to via City Airport all the better.

We'll probably base ourselves in one location (nice hotel, meals etc) and do circuits (sorry was not specific) - we're not ones for weighing down our light weight bikes (and less than light weight bodies) with excess luggage!
South coast does make a lot of sense (thanks), and some good hills within reach for some variation. I remember doing some fantastic driving from Monaco heading Northish (an hour or so outside town) with tunnels carved into the rock face. Would be great on a road bike.
I do also recall some pretty brutal hills later on... and that was with 360bhp to hand.. not sure how my 0.2bhp would bear up!
