Hired some NiteRider TriNewt for the event, but wasn't impressed with the light output or the beam pattern. What are people's recommendations for this type of thing?

Look on the singletrack.com forum - there's a chap called trout who's knocking out 1000 lumen lights for around £100.

Personally, I use Hope 4-led on the bars, Hope 2-led on the helmet, total 1500 lumens. Probably 'wrong' in the eyes of the purist, because it's too much like daylight, but I really don't care.

I have an Exposure Enduro Maxx on the bars and a 200 Lumen Cree spot on my nogging for seeing around corners.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-200-Lumens-CREE-LED-XR-E...

I removed the torch from it's clamp and zip tied it to my lid with the battery pack mounted at the back of the helmet, it weighs bugger all and you don't notice it after 5 minutres riding. It has a 3 hour run time from 3x standard AA batteries, longer from NiCad's etc. No settings, simply on and off.

I have Lupine LED lights and i really rate them against the competition.

Lupines after care service is very good and although not what you maybe after my Wilmas 6's on full blast keep going for 4 hours +.... and provide excellent light. 2 years on and the market may of moved on and i certainly know they do better battery packs for the new lights.

My preference is to have it on my head although if i had something less bright like a joystick (not sure who makes those) the wilmas would be on the bars and i'd have the small one head mounted.

I have one of those and have to say they are excellent. Probably the best beam pattern of all the lights I've used/seen when out riding with mates.

Just to add, it's not all about the lumens - beam pattern is critical as some of the newer LED lights are much brighter but not as good IMHO when it comes to projection and amount of trail illuminated - the L&M gets this balance spot on IMHO.

If anyone wants a cheap helmet light that works brilliantly I'd recommend a LED LENSER H7 head torch. Cost about ~ £40 http://www.thetorchsite.co.uk/LED_Lenser_H7_Head_T...

I have for one for mountain rescue purposes, but also use when out pedalling. They are stunning value for something so light and powerful. You can also adjust the focus of the beam to a really long throw spot to a big wide beam.

Me too. 2 guys I know use them.

The only downside now is that they've closed their UK outlet, so support is via Oz.

Or - 2x infamous '3W Tesco Torches' attached to helmet.

Used these to great effect at MM this year, well impressed. 2 for £15 quid.

Surprised noone has mentioned lumicycle, had mine a couple of years and very impressed and you can get replacement bulbs of different power and beam pattern pretty cheaply.
