cycling padded shorts

Hello riders,

I mainly ride tow-path and pavement but Im a large guy (6"3, 18stone)...

Im trying to decide what shorts to buy but everyone seems to offer kindda the same but what shorts have you opted for?? How do you rate them?? Is there a name to stick with or really is it better to spend more??

I don`t really require "warm shorts" or waterproof and defo no bib`s.
Just really after padding and tough (hard wearing).

Pair of baggies with a liner. I've a couple of nice pairs (by nice, read trendy branded ones), but recently went to Decathlon and picked up a reasonable pair for about £20.

its not often that i say buy the very best that you can afford (on aco of me being a tightarse by nature!) but in terms of mens cycling shorts, its the truth. i would recommend a pair of nalini bib shorts or something. 8 panel cut and a removable liner. also buy ssome cahmois cream. personally i would look at the pro team stuff as its designed to be sat in for hours on end...

given your size look for something with a cutaway stomach as they are much comfier. thats not meant to be cheap dig at your size, just that the cycling position isnt best suited to the larger frame.

bib shorts are so comfy, its just an image problem but at the end of the day, the last part of your body that you should be jeopardising in terms of comfort are those dangly bits between your legs....

Seems a bit of a daft limitation - bib shorts are far comfier - less pressure around your waist and no sweaty waistband.

Spend as much as you can afford - shorts aren't really a place you want to skimp on. For years i rode mid priced bibs (£30-50) or whatever crap i got through the team. This year i shelled out £105 for a pair of Assos bibs - worth every penny.

Another vote for Assos BIB (I know you said no bibs but no bibs cut in at the waist).

If your worried about image get a pair of baggies and wear over the top!

Bib shorts every time whether under baggies or not. Endura are another good brand in terms of quality and durability. Always wash after every use (you do not want the boils you risk otherwise) and don't leave sweaty (kills the liners)

How about non-bib shorts that are as comfy as bibs? I have these and they are great:

Why no bib shorts? You don't have to wear them like the guys in the adverts with no tops on! Bibs are SOOOOOO much comfier, more flattering gut-wise (jeez I sound like a girl here!) and once your jersey is on no-one will know! (apart from the fact there's zero builder's arse risk!) Bought bibs this year (tights and shorts) and not warn regular shorts since.

Granted the baggy look is far better on a mountain bike though...

I use these padded under shorts ( Padded boxer shorts). I just wear them under my normal baggy shorts or bottoms, very comfy and soft and they are fine for general riding.
