1k to spend... which bike ?
Discussion
Firstly my apologies to any previous similar threads!! The market moves on so I need to ask the question...
I am done with my old FSR , it was a great bike but its nackered and I seriously think it might be one of the first full sussers ever... its yellow and massive and HEAVY !
I've not been out for ages but my preferred trek is through woods , uphill and downhill , every bikers staple diet I guess. So the question is do I go hardtail or full susp ? Ive been eyeing up a rockhopper pro, and also a trek 6500 which is a bit more money but Im concerned I will regret not going the whole hog with a full suspension bike?
Do I really need full suspension? Can you firm up the rear shock so that it becaomes a hard tail so to speak?

trek 6700 or boardman comp but check the geomoetry first and make sure they fit. i think the trek is a great looking bike and has the best spec around bar the boardman which is just awesome value for money.
full sus at that price isnt worth it, the bikes will be heavy and poorly specced, if you really wanted to go full sus i would look at the giant anthem x3 but there is little else out there worth considering.
a good hardtail is almost as fast over light to medium stuff as a full sus and a full sus at £1K wont have the shocks that can adjust rapidly to rough terrain taken at speed. get good at using your legs as dampers, reading the trails and you should manage a hardtail fine and really enjoy the ride...

the boardman pro is great value for money and has a good string of reviews in the press. reba race fork and avid elixir brakes then a smattering of sram x9/0 and ritchey finishing kit.... the crankset lets it down a bit but its all functional stuff. i do like the trek too. they are both full on race ready xc bikes and you wouldnt be disappointed with either. some of the early 09 6700 treks were specced with SLX throughout but this might have been a US thing and not a UK spec bike.
the problem with full sus at that price is you inevitably want to start upgrading soon as the kit on the bike isnt great but you end up paying a lot more as you buy the bits individually and lose out on the manufacturers ability to utilise econoomies of scale hence why boardman can put together the bike at that price.
read neils good piece on why certain shops push certian brands in the other thread.

I'm very happy with my Trek 6300. I've upgraded to a Reba SL fork so it probably rides quite a lot like the 6700. Only got Deore kit on it but it seems decent to me, better than the cheaper SRAM stuff anyway. The Boardman Pro looks excellent for the money.
I'm no expert on what makes a good XC bike but it seems fast and composed over rough undulating dirt and gravel paths.

interesting.. so Ive been looking at this exact bike! whilst I said 1K is the (max) budget I have kind of settled on a choice of two currently being the spec rockhopper pro and the trek 6300. Sad to say it but im not sure about the orange colour scheme on the Trek but overall I prefer the look!! I think the Cube bikes look good but I dont know much about them and would find it difficult to part with the cash for something relatively unknown..?I'm no expert on what makes a good XC bike but it seems fast and composed over rough undulating dirt and gravel paths.
Couple of guys have these on their cycle scheme at work:

Totally gutted. This is highly embarassing but playing golf last night I was digging around in a bush with my right foot searching out my ball and managed to do something very wrong to my achilles tendon! I walked it off but today its got a lump the size of a golf ball (ironically) hanging off the back of it. I am off work because I cant walk on it - nightmare!!!! My biking career and bike purchase just took a huge step backwards.
Whats the rehibiltation recommendation from the PH doctor? Elevate it on ice?

Is it the tendon or has a Horse Fly feasted on you. I was got a few weeks ago whilst in the garden and an almsot identical thing happened, massive rock hard lump on the back of my ankle where the tendon is and it didn't go down for days. Really hurt to walk on.Whats the rehibiltation recommendation from the PH doctor? Elevate it on ice?
Anyway, take anti-hystamine (sp?) for the swelling and apply ice, elevate it and perhaps rub some witch hazel on it if it itches.
A Specialized FSR Expert has come up , 08 model , for about the same money I was about to spend on a Rockhopper Pro. Somebody on this thread previously stated that an entry level full suspension bike would be rubbish yet the spec of this bike looks pretty good! What do you think? I've read about the rear shock and the lockout feature would appear to be pretty useful so do I simply just turn it off when I want it to act like a hard tail?
