Avocet cycle computers

Does anyone happen to know if Avocet are still in business? Their website still works, but there's no sign of stockists / ordering information.

I seem to think 'back in the day' that Avocet were meant to be the most accurate computers out there?

Would be a shame if they're not doing very well now - the website above doesnt exactly look groundbreaking.

Pretty sure I have one in a shoebox full of 'stuff' if you want one.

Lots of interesting odds and ends in this box including some suicide Cinelli M71 pedals (no cleats thou)

Blimey, thats a blast from the past.

Considered the best on the market at the time, more reliable than the Cateyes of the day.

Christ only knows if they're sold now.

Was just reading on another forum that they can no longer manufacture them as they never got round to buying the rights to the circuits / chips

I used to swear by Avocets

Much better than Cateye back in the day. Also much smaller and lighter too.

The only brand worthy of switching over to was the Sigma sport BC which had cadence.

But also about a million models and accesories.

Avocet = Simple
Cateye = for the MTBers
Sigma = for the roadies

My Avocet had it's 'pick up' on the hub - a circular magnetic ring that clipped onto the spokes or something. Were they mostly like this or was that something they tried and failed with?

..I remember liking the idea, but cant exactly remember why.

Mine had that - it would give something like 20 pulses per revolution compared to 1 for the normal "magnet on a spoke" type. But IIRC it would fall off quite regularly.
