Totally zoning out during a ride....
Discussion
Has anyone else ever had this? Went out for a bike ride yesterday on the road bike. Sat around outside for about an hour beforehand waiting for people to finish lunch and get ready etc. Then set off and rode about 5.7 miles. I wasnt out of breath or exhausted but all of a sudden I had an overwhelming urge to just stop, felt light headed, sick and just wanted to go to sleep by the side of the road. It was the weirdest thing, I was very, very hot but not sweating at all. Does this sound like heatstroke? Admittedly I hadnt had much food all day and probably not enough to drink before the ride, but was drinking plenty during the first 5 miles. I'd also put in a bit of effort but nothing over the top or any different to how fast I would normally go. While I'm by no way the fittest person, I have managed 70 mile rides this summer and thought I was doing ok. But to not even manage 6 miles (had to be picked up as I just couldnt move) I felt so stupid. Feel ok this morning though after lots of water, some food and a very long sleep.

its comonly referred to as a "bonk" and typical of Roadies on long all day epics. some good stuff here:

I had one at Coed Y Brenin last month and its basically a combination of a lack of food and water and your body simply running out of fuel. your head will feel light and you suddenly lose the ability to ride properly. if off road, this means dabbing your foot at random places where you would never normally dab and losing your balance a lot. if on road, it basically means slowing down and geting the wobbles. its very dangerous and i was lucky to have a mate with me who was happy to stop and wait for a while till my head cleared.
i slugged a gel and some water down and felt better after about 10 minutes but it crept up on me without warning despite a good breakfast and staying hydrated (or at least i thought i was!)

Cheers guys, i had been working in the garden in the morning beforehand, so i guess that didnt help, and i probably didnt have enough to eat or drink before the ride and was sat outside in the sun before we went. Just feel a bit silly only getting 6 miles and then not being able to move....
Hope it doesnt happen again as it wasnt a nice feeling!

Sounds like a couple of things contributing, lack of glucose and hydration so "bonk" sound right :-)
Be careful, if this happens and your body is tired then your immune system also drops, you'll be more suseptible to illness for a few days.
I did the London Tri on Sunday and by Thursday I was out of it with what seemed like Swine Flu - even NHS agreed and tamiflu'd me up.
