Can anyone on here ride a unicycle. I have just got one and it only took me a day to learn to ride it, I can now hop and turn as well. They are fun and something to do on a lazy week.

There is a guy who unicycles into my work!

He locks it up beside all the other bikes, funny as fook watching him cycling down to the roundabout and waiting for the cars to stop before heading off in a frantic style across the road biggrin

As much as I chortle at some of these guys and how stupid they look, they certainly are bloody clever and good at what they do.

I recently watched a really well shot video on Pinkbike of a guy in BC riding a local DH trail at speeds that would have me reaching for the body armour - and yet he was on a unicyle!

Insane hehe

Oddly enough I had a go last Saturday... only got about 30mins on it, but i could keep it on the spot...I think the wife is looking to get me one because it kept me quite for said 30 minutes.

So if you see a chap learning to unicycle outside womanie type shops in Lancaster; that'll be me.

Got one, and all I have managed to do is fall off. How did you learn? Is there a knack, or something special I should be doing apart from hugging a tree?

I've had one in the garage for a few years.

Would love to learn to ride it, but it is having the time and forgetting the potential pain.

Any points would be great.

Just got my first uni today. Only had about 10 minutes playing on it. My balance is pretty good normally so hopefully should pick it up quickly! Any tips?

Also I think I wanna paint the frame to spice it up a bit, would normal spray paint work or would I need to do something special to sort it out?

Well, if you put a cage and some lights on it you'd mark yourself down as a total nut if nothing else.

Tell you what would focus the mind though - swap the pedals out for cleats/clips biggrin

Ah, excellent! Anyone got some good step-by-step advice for learnung to ride unicycles? I bought one off ebay at xmas for my son when he was 6 months old, and the ungrateful bogger hasn't even tried it yet, so it's down to me to try it first! Motorbike trials background, so my balance is good, but I'm a cowardy custard and it looks like I'll get hurt!

I think the best thing to do is just get on and play with it and get used to it. Obviously holding on to stuff at first.

If you can't do this after 2 weeks on it, just give up and go back to using a bicycle.

Well, after playing on it for a few hours I can get on unassisted, and balance for a few seconds. Progress!

I have just remembered that my step brother left one of these in my garage when he moved away, think I might get it out this week and have a go.

So by now you should be commuting to work on it!

Or is it gathering dust in the shed?

I have a couple of wheels, although my son has taken my new Muni to Uni, so I am in the market for another one...

Ive had one for about 15 years. It took me about 2 years of reasonably frequent practice to be able to ride it reasonably. These days I don't ride it very often but it only takes me a couple of minutes to get back to what I was.

To me the biggest thing in learning is not balance, its quick reflexes. Everything can be going well then you hit a minor bump and can be off in a fraction of a second unless you're quick enough to catch it.

Either practice on grass or learn how to dismount and catch the seat otherwise a new unicycle will start looking second hand pretty quickly.

Though the best tip I can give is tuck your shoelaces into your shoes. The only time I came off it badly was when they hooked around a pedal crank and I couldnt take my feet off it to save myself.

Throw bread at unicyclists, they really don't like that! :-)
