Rear mech hanger confusion

I have a 2006 Marin Eldridge Grade and have fractured the rear mech hanger so need a replacement. I can't find anywhere that specifically lists a mech hanger for my bike. I have however found a mech hanger which apparently suits 'some marins' and looks very similar in the photo. Is this good enough to go by or do I need to be more fussy.
Also... why is a piece of machined metal so expensive?! And also, why are there so many different designs of rear mech hanger? It's not just that every brand uses a different design, but different models in the range also seem to use a different design. Surely it serves a simple purpose so why not make them all the same?!
