First visit to Glentress on Sunday
Discussion
As the title says, I have been coerced into heading to Glentress on Sunday with some guys from work, I think 2 of them visit regularly, for the other 3 of us it will be a first time experience!
I have decided to hire one of their hardtails rather than lug my old heavy Halfords Carrera up the hill
I am going to take my saddlebag off my Commuter to carry some stuff in, and will be taking some sandwiches up with me.
Anything else you would recommend?
I have been warned to leave the lycra at home and baggy up!
Hoping the weather holds for it.
Cheers,

Best bet is a small rucksack like the narrow camelback style ones, some tools but don't go overboard, great thing about Glentress is that the carpark is almost always a downhill roll away from you, something breaks and you can generally coast back down, bit of a pain but better than Fort William or somewhere that when you break down you can be a long trek across some hills to get back.
Never sure what to make about the Lycra/ no lycra debate, its all a bit silly really, if you are comfortable in lycra then wear it, I wear baggies when mucking around in my local woods, when I hit Glentress I always wear lycra, simple reason it works, if your pedaling for a good few hours, then I don't want chaffing or shorts constantly snagging the nose of my saddle on the drops.
Most importantly enjoy, its a wicked place, and treat yourself to a slice of cake in the cafe at the bottom, its great!

my first proper mtb experience was glentress. I am generally fit but wasnt really prepared for a 2hr climb! still the way down on the red route was superb. honestly i came off 6 times in 30 minutes on the descent, how i didnt seriously hurt myself i will never know!!!
still i loved it! and also inverleithen the next day, fantastic!

Rentals up there are Kona Calderas (at least they were a month ago) - so a half decent bit of kit to hire. I'd consider hiring rather than dismantling my bike to get it in the Boxster, but it's just not the same on someone elses bike IMHO.
I went for the first time last month, and am back again at the end of this month. The bug has truly bitten (and it's an 800 mile round trip for me!)

Well that's me back!
WHAT a fantastic time, no spills, got a Genesis Altitude as a hire - great bike!
We decided to stick to Blue runs but still very enjoyable.
I see what you mean about the climb
Our first downhill part was Blue Velvet - we had so much fun, we went back up and did it again.
We somehow missed Betty Blue but we'll get it next time.
Fantastic weather, great company and a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
We will be back before the year is out.

I thought you might have got a Genesis, didn't like to say as the others were all saying Kona
. Nice bikes though.
Perhaps you missed Betty Blue by taking the return route too soon (They do crossover, and you use the same bit of forest road twice for a short distance). Easy mistake I guess for someone who doesn't know the route.

I was about to post and say I bet you got a Genesis
An ex-hire Genesis Altitude is my main bike - I bought mine from The Hub at Glentress as they sold off their previous year's models. Best hardtail frame I've ridden, love mine.
Good choice to stick to the blue routes if you're newish to it all - they're still damn good fun at Glentress. Blue Velvet is a cracking bit of trail, try to hit it without dabbing the brakes if you go again...
