Morning...

Off to Afan in October (for the first time) and a mate wants to come along - he has a Hardrock - and I am not sure if a hardtail with V brakes is going to be 'up to it' - as when we did Glentress, I would not have liked to ride a hardtail with V brakes... He is an 'average' MTB I guess...

Just want to know that if he comes along on his HR, his bike will manage.

I know the answer is probably 'yes', but if someone who has done Afan, can just confirm that a hardrock will be capable.

Thanks.

Yep, Afan's fine on a V-braked hardtail. It's a bit easier on a full suspension bike, and discs are a lot more progressive, but he'll have no problems.

More than capable. I was musing whether to go rigid when I rode the Penhydd on Saturday.

My girlfriend rode The Wall at Afan with me and a few mates earlier in the year on her RST shocked, V-braked Speccy hardrock. She got on fine. I think she found the crap suspension more of a problem than the v-brakes down the final descent! On my previous visit my mate rode the trails on a singlespeed fully rigid Kona and got on fine...

So yes, I think your mate will be ok!

I do Penhydd and Whites regularly on my '99 Kona Explosif. Rock Shox REBAs up front, no probs. Disk up front, Vs at the back. I'll be trying Penhydd on my '97 rigid Kilauea in a month or so - when it's built.

Seen a few nutters of fully rigid bikes too. I think they like to show off that they can get round quicker than most on full sussers.

There's one guy I see there occasionally who rides on an old Alpinestars fully rigid, which is probably worth about £50. Faster than most.

Some of the trails at Afan pre-date the invention, or atleast the common use of disc brakes and even suspention forks so he should be ok.

As with riding anywhere, ride within your limits and if it all goes wrong and the paramedic says "do you wanna go to Morriston or Princess of Wales mate?" POW FTW I had sterlin service there ha ha.

I live locally to Afan, and I was riding the Afan area back in the early '90s. I was amazed to go back there 10 years on, to find they'd named the trails and connected bits n bobs together.

My early rides there were on a rigid Marin Bear Valley SE, then an Indian Fire Trail with Mag 21s. Hairy days!! Great fun though.

Didn't ride Afan on an FS bike (Lapierre 514) till this year. Nice and comfy.

Another vote for POW, as the traffic into Morriston is shocking.
