Hi everyone i'm looking at buying a used Specialized Rockhopper.

I'm getting a bit confused between models, there appears to be Rockhoppers, pros, pro discs, comp etc models with the prices ranging between the models.

As I'm looking at used, there are obviously also older models 07, 08, 09 and now 10 models in each.

Firstly does the spec change much year on year? Are there any particular models to be avoided? I'm looking at spending somewhere around £400 max. Is it generally better getting an older higher spec bike or a new lower spec bike for the same price? I don't expect to be doing much serious mountain biking, mainly tracks fields small hills etc.

Thanks in advance.

We've got a pro and a normal disc.

Its pretty much just spec that differs between them, look on the specialized site for exact details (they go back several years).

I'd say newer the better and to get one with hydraulic disc brakes and a 120mm front shock (think the basic model don't have hydraulic disc and only a 100mm shock though may be wrong)

Then spend lots of money changing the saddle, seat, lights, grips, tyres etc (not that it will make any difference to the ride but its good fun)

I have been looking at a rockhopper this afternoon. I am told it was last years model (not sure if that means it's 08 or 09). It's a matt silver/champagne colour and definately had hydraulic brakes.

It's up for sale at £599, not sure if that's a good buy or not?

If its last years haggle a bit, pick up the the mtb magazines from whsmiths and they have loads of ads with places selling last years models.

Hi David,

Thanks for that. I "think" it's the 2008 Rockhopper Disc. It's a bit tricky to tell from the picture if it is a matt silver or a gloss. I'm guessing it is a matt.

I will try and go and get a mtb magazine.

Does £599 seam reasonable. The bike is a 17 inch frame and I will have to have the seat post cut down for me.

2010 bikes are now in the shop, so I guess it would be an '09 version !

The 2010 bikes are out now, last years model would be the '09 one wouldn't it?

that sounds like a standard rockhopper disc, i have a 2009 one but in red/white. to be honest £599 is the full retail price, i paid 589 for mine. if its a 2009 model you want some discount off.

When I was in the shop on Saturday looking at the bike i've mentioned, they said that the 10's were on their way into stock and were a lot more money.

Ok well i've been down and ordered it. Have decided to do it via Cycle to Work Scheme.

I'm told it will take about 3 weeks. Have just got to decide if I want a ladies saddle on it.

Thats a bit of a shame. I have an 09 Rockhopper expert disc in the Garage. used once, and in showroom condition. Thinking about putting it up for sale to help fund the engagement ring for t'other half....
