Hi,

Considering a bike for a daily commute of under 5 miles to University, depending on the parking spaces available this year, but am unsure as to what type of bike to go for i.e road bike etc. The commute involves mostly roads with the odd pavement. None of the roads are main roads so pretty light on traffic.

However the sticking point seems to be that a section of this involves cobbles of a good few hundred yards! Would a road bike be ok for this or should I be looking for something thats a bit less 'racy' with the fatter tyres and more 'upright' sitting, etc. Love the look of some of these road bikes but I realise that is not the point, and as winter sets in I wonder about their usability. The bike would most likely be purchased used.

Any help appreciated.

Under 5 miles IMO isn't really worth getting changed for a good road bike. I'd take a look at hybrids. Don't bother with suspension if you're only using it on or around roads.

Thanks. Yeah I have been doing a bit of searching about and it seems a hybrid might be the way to go without any suspension. As you say with such a short commute a road bike might be wasted really.
