Anyone have any experience using bike alarms?

I am thinking comuters and town users rather than serious MTB'er or roadies, when you leave your bike unattended in a public area what precautions do you take? Would a simple alarm device which raised the alarm of a potential thief seem like a worthwhile investment?

I have an idea for something but thought I would test the water here for a no BS answer first! I can't go into too much detail as the IP behind the device is hush hush at this stage but its not triggered by a movement sensor.

you could use an alarmed disc lock such as those used on motorbikes.

haha, not Dragons den I don't think Chris. I work for a product design company so we should be able to do this on our own. I just have a bit of a wager going with a couple of colleagues as a bit of added incentive!

Unit cost should be relatively low, and I was thinking it would be in addition to standard locking devices. So you lock the bike up, but then if anyone tries to tamper with the bike the unit gives out rape alarm type noise for a few seconds which should stop a potential thief in their tracks and alert the general public.

As I say... early stages at the moment, just want to get a feel for whether its something people like.

Any feedback from people who currently use alarms would be good too :-)

I'd say as anything in the bike world make it as small/light but tough as possible. I know those 3 things dont normally go together but I'm sure you get what i mean!
