Following on from the helmet discussion topic, and the heated debate that seems to be raging, I though I'd ask for some recommendations for a reasonable replacement helmet. After coming a cropper on Wednesday, I now need a new helmet.

This one was only a Bell Venture and I probably don't want to spend much more than about £30-£40 quid (yes I know it's protecting my head!) as I'm only off road riding once per week and I'm certainly not in the 'extreme' bracket just yet! The background to my tumble was I got my wheel caught in a rut and it simply threw me out.

Now I've seen these:
Bell Venture ie replacement
Specialized Air Force 3
Lima 520
or do I go for something like a Giro Rift?

Any comments and suggestions welcome! I'll be using the wife's Bell Venture to cycle home tomorrow so will be buying something over the coming week.

At that price range I'd go for the Specialized personally.

Try them all, and more. And then buy whichever fits the best.

I've just bought a Scott from Evans Cycles - it was £45 reduced from £90.

I recently tested a Fox Flux to destruction, I rate it!

Lots of adjustment to get the right fit.

STIF still have the odd size/colour '08 for half price.

^^^^ this. Self and OH have the same hat size but completely different head shapes - she wears a Bell and I have a Specialized.

+2 when I first started riding, I must have tried about 20 lids and never found anything that fitted. Settled for about £90s worth of specialised as it was least uncomfortable. Kept it for 5 or 6 years. Went out with my son to buy him his first lid and thought i would try a couple on for a laugh while I was there. £30 Bell Venture was best fit and most comfortable ever. By a mile. Its not about the money, or the brand, simply about fit, so try lots before you buy!

i use a spesh echelon which is a road helmet but i find they are better vented and as i get a hot head i prefer this. the lack of visor doesnt bother me, we coped for years without a visor and i think its predominantly an appearance thing brought about in the early 90s by popularity of downhil lracing and the desire to look cool.

i like the clicky dial for fit adjustment at the back too, its easy to operate with only one hand on hte move so you can loosen/tighten at will.
