My young 'un is 6 years old and is bike mad. He comes home from school every night and rides his bike. He rides his bike all weekend, doing jumps, and skids, and all that stuff that I used to do as a kid - just more so.

He has ridden a mountain bike for the last couple of years, and it is all I can do to keep the piece of junk ship-shape and Bristol fashion. Anyway, we have decided to buy him a BMX / Stunt bike for Christmas and need some advice as children's BMXs are not really my thing.

I am looking for something light, good quality that he can ride every day and that he will get a couple of years out of.

Any and all advice welcome.

Thanks chaps.

Have a look at some of these, depending on his size..16-18" wheels, you will prob have to try him on a few to decide.

Also if buying online..Alansbmx are highly recommended (never used winstanleys but they seem to have a huge range available).

Moongoose do a good "pit crew". Which is a full spec proper BMX on a small frame. Rather than some cheap version made to look like a bmx.

As you mentioned at he's age I'm guessing he'll only get another two or three years out of a junior size bike so there's question on how long you expect him to ride it or can you hand it down at somepoint.

No such thing as a really light BMX with good reason, they need to take a lot of abuse so everything is oversized & over engineered. But there small enough to chuck around. And as there single speed as well don't necessarily need as much TLC.

I have one of these waiting for my boy when he is old enough it is strong enough to bear my weight doing a bit of messing so will be plenty good enough for your little-un.

Edit - here is a list of some 16" bikes from triton, have never used these and am not recommending them, they just have a good list of proper 16" BMX's

Thanks for your help gents. Given the lack of TLC his existing one has had I eckon he'll be lucky to get more than a couple of years out of it so 16" is probably the way to go. Of course he will no doubt grow another foot in the 3 months after we commit to it but that is what kids are for I guess!

Eddie, my kid's just turned nine, and he's had his BMX bike for about two years, so bought when he was six at a guess.

I actually bought him a full-size adult BMX, a Felt Base I think. The problem I had, and the on going problem that I have, is that my kid will take as much air as possible, wherever possible, and whilst I can't stop him doing that, I can at least ensure that his bikes don't fold up on landing, so I didn't want a potentially weaker kid-specific bike.

He's a tall kid, so even at six, he was ok with a full size BMX bike. For the first year, I adjusted the handlebars a bit rearwards, to fit him better, but a few months ago, I moved the bars back to their normal position.

My kid actually loves this bike, and prefers it to his MTB. I'd recommend this route and it is even future-proof in terms of not out growing it.
