Not sure if anyone can answer this, but say the same rider did a 20m ride on roads on both a mountain bike and road bike. Assuming the same effort put in by the rider on both trips, how much quicker would the the road bike be that the mountain bike?

It really is impossible to say. Depends on what MTB/Tyre combination and type of road bike. I'd say though your looking at probably an extra 5mph average speed over a ride for a HT off road tyre shod MTB vs a mid range road bike, but as I say the type of MTB/tyre combo you're comparing against is critical.

On my fixed I can usually manage an 8 mile ride in around 27 minutes (I know it's not that fast but there's quite a bit of traffic to contend with). On this

I can do it in around 33 minutes without breaking a sweat, if I pushed it I could probably work of 2-3 mins.

So that's not a huge difference considering the fixed is 8.5 kilos with 23mm tyres, and the cruiser is twice the weight, with flat pedals and huge tyres.

I actually do the same road on both my Road and MTB and on my road I do it easily at and maintain 25mph whereas on my mtb I have to really put a lot of effort in to get to and maintain 17mph.....

An 80 min ride on the mountain bike will be done in 60 mins on the road bike. Both bikes are superb £3.5 k bikes.

Not impossible to answer. It's easy, the road bike will do it alot quicker. Even with high pressure, narrow 'slick' tyres and higher gearing on the mtb, the road bike will still be quicker.

If it weren't, then the riders in the Tour de France would be riding very different machines.

He said how much quicker, everyone knows that a road bike will be quicker.

On my road commutes I reckon my roadie is approx 20% quicker than my MTB on slicks over the same routes.

My 13 mile pot hole - debris strewn - traffic infested commute is average 50 mins on slick tyred good quality MTB and 45 mins on an expensive steel framed audax bike with sensible tyres.
The difference would be larger if the MTB had knobblies and the audax bike had proper racing tyres and no mudguards.

I used to do a 17 mile lap of country roads on my old singlespeed Pug Roady in roundabout 52 minutes, and I am fairly sure my hardtail MTB even with high pressures took an hour and 20 minutes or thereabouts on the same route.
