with these SPD's (pedal style) http://www.evanscycles.com/products/shimano/m545-s...

and all i can say is I'm inlove!!! i was worried as i have never thought i could come away from flats (currently dmr v12 mag's) sure the set up is a bit weightier but over all am glad i took the plunge, any one considering should definitly try clipless.... i will never 'pull' the crank al always push (lets see how long that last's)

Better that than a 4x4...
New to SPD's myself. Junctions are still a slightly nervous time.

When you are nervous isn't when it will get you.

The first couple of weeks, you will unclip miles from any reason to stop, so no danger of falling. After then, you will start to get cocky and start to try trackstanding or even just rolling up to lights/junctions slowly while clipped in - that is when you will have the comedy slow motion fall - and someone will ask you if you are ok, and you will want the world to eat you. All part of the fun smile

Yup, that's what happened to me.
Yup, done that too when I first used them. Right after I'd snaked my way through the queuing traffic and was sitting in the advanced cycle stop lane bit in front of the queued cars... loser

Beats doing it next to a bus full of students at the lights.
Predicting my next screw up before I do it is not good...!

I had my first experience of spds at the weekend - and despite having it at the back of my mind, I still managed to topple somewhat-less-than-gracefully off a trail and into a hawthorn bush.

Luckily my mates pulled me back up the hill - not before copious p1ss-taking of course. Just couldn't get unclipped in time. I'm going to stick it out for a bit (luckily using borrowed shoes and pedals) and see if I like them or not.

At this stage, while I felt some benefits of being clipped in, I'm not sold on them.

On the road, it is a no brainer - SPDs make a massive difference

For XC, they still make a huge difference, but rider confidence really comes into it

For DH and other mad stuff, its a preference, i was always a flats and 5.10s guy, other liked SPDs

Riding fixed with clipless is fun, especially stopping.

I was looking at these last night as i need some new shoes, have really oldschool shimano ones (cream coloured with black strap going over front) used to use them on my dh535 pedals (the dh clunky red things).. But now have a road bike and want some pedals with float rather the road jobbys with 0deg float.. Anyway love the fact that theyre half price but theyre a tad grippy for road use, hmm..

I've got a pair of Look Keos, you can get them in either 0 deg float, 4.5 deg float, or 9 deg float.

Wait till your chain falls off and you have about seven seconds of comically fast peddling before toppling to one side.

545's a classic, i have used them for at least 10 years now, one of the bearings is on its way out now though smile

my first clipless event was at a roundabout, in front of loads of people including a police patrol car, the 2 coppers didn't know whether to laugh or help smile

Another recent SPD convert here for off roading. I found it dead easy to get to grips with, until we went out for a ride with a group of friends, where I ultimately fell off, infront of everyone whilst stopping laugh It was a typical case of unclip left, try and put the right foot down.

Once I'd done that for the 2nd or 3rd time you kind of learn. As you're only going slow it won't hurt - it's just embarassing!

What a timely thread, i just bought a set of these pedals and these shoes today. Tried them out and they're fantastic, I've got so much more confidence on the bumpy stuff. Hopefully I'll be able to keep up on the trails with my mates now. They all have clipless and FS bikes.

OT: Hello alfa145uk, fancy seeing you here (phaderunner from Alfa 145/Alfaowner.com forums until 2004)!

When I first got mine I was messing about pulling wheelies and went over a bit far. Couldn't unclip, went all the way over and landed square on the bottom of my back......foooking ouch!!

Luckily there was nobody about to laugh and point.

They're good, worth making sure you know how to adjust the clip springs to make them easier to pop.
