What mountain bike- £800-£1000
Discussion
Evening all,
Having discovered the joyous fact that I can have a second bite of the Cyclescheme cherry, I am looking to buy a mountain bike for the rough sum above.
I won't be doing anything too hardcore- Mainly tooling around the local woods and the occasional trip to Afan/Cwmcarn. Full suspension does appeal but the bike shop chap was trying to put me off it.
Basically, fairly nimble and light rather than bombproof is my specification. Can't be Kona or Scott because my LBS don't stock them...

I had exactly the same question acouple of months ago and now have a Cube Ltd Team. I think it's fab for exactly what you have described and looks ace. I know the gear freaks will say you can get a higher spec for the money. But if you are not going mad you will never know the difference so I would say buy what appeals to you and forget everyone else.
But what do I know................
But what do I know................
there are literally thousands to choose from. £1K is about the limit for an effective full suspension bike though and i would be inclined to go for a good hardtail. there are not many 2010 bikes reviewed yet but bikes from Cannondale, Genesis, Charge, Trek, Specialized and Orange are all worth a look...
personally, i would have a good look at the Giant XTC2 though....
just make sure it fits, many will have geometry and top/seat tube lengths on the web...

At his price range one should always pay careful consideration to a Merlin Malt 4 hardtail. An excellent bike

For the type of usage that the OP suggests then I'd go along with the above. I do mixed XC/single trail/track riding with a group of friends and a couple of the more serious riders have 'downgraded' to hardtails (Orange and Cannondale).personally, i would have a good look at the Giant XTC2 though....

Personally I use a Marin NailTrail and find it more than adequate but next time I'll probably go Orange.
Right, I now have a voucher for the LBS and think I have narrowed it down to the following 2:
Cube XMS
or
Cube Ltd. Race
Basically both Cube, one a full susser the other a hardtail. Bloke at the LBS is strongly advising me to get a hardtail, but I am unsure.
I'm going to mainly be doing local woods and trail centres, no major downhilling...
