...so I pulled the old bike out and got myself onto the Leeds / Liverpool canal tow path on Saturday. Good whether helped, I had about 50 minutes on the bike and thoroughly enjoyed myself. Gonna try and stick with it, so I hope no-one minds me dropping in here.

With only one leg fully consisting of flesh and bone, I need to break myself into this gently - at least on the tow path I can pace myself quite easily. A work colleague is encouraging joint ventures into the wilderness (or at least the local woods) so we'll see what develops. If nothing else, I need to shift a pound or two from my waistline, ahem.

All welcome in here, dump your booze on the kitchen table for all to share...

I'm sure you'll bite the bug again - most in here seem to have done so. Most in here also need to lose a few inches too..

Nothing to be ashamed of of starting off again on the towpaths. Better that than chucking yourself down a mountain when your body & head aren't up to it. Give it a few weeks on the towpath and then chuck yourself down a mountain when your body & head still aren't up to it hehe

Just have fun. As you've already got a riding buddy I'm sure you'll be pushing each other a bit further each time anyway smile

Edit: Just read that back and fk me that sounded cheesy. Well meant though smile

You can't just leave such a comment hanging like that! I don't mean to pry, but tell us more about your set up if you don't mind.

Err, it's like this: I'm an LBK (left below knee) amputee, due to a non-fault motorcycle accident caused by an very illegal driver(after 20 years riding experience). These days I'm very good at finding excuses not to make an effort to get on the bike, have to be careful of my stump's condition and the older I get the more fearful (perhaps irrationally) I am of riding on the road. Simple as that really.

I don't know if anyone else here uses Richmond Park in London for training, but there is a guy I have seen there a few times who is very similar to you and he gives a very good account of himself on a road bike so go for it! Good luck!

Crikey!

Next time i cant be bothered going riding cos its umm a bit wet or cold or something i'll realise what a big girl's blouse i am being.

Do you mind if i ask - as it was non fault, are you still raging at the guy or how does it feel with the passing of time?

I don't know really. I spent 3 days sat in a County Court in September while my legal guys were fighting for a settlement and the guy and his father were there - without doubt the worst 3 days of my life (mentally and emotionally speaking) which wasn't a pile of fun for either me or my wife. We won by the way, the judge found no fault on my side as did the Police at the time of the collision, which was a blessing and a relief.

I am thankful to be around. The senior policeman at the accident now tells me that I was rather closer to death than I realised - but I'll not go into the details now...
