That's right, I said helmet.

Anyway, after throwing myself down a mountain in Wales, I've cracked my helmet. And ruined my arse as it happens, but that's an entirely new thread. So, I've been trying to get hold of a new one. Helmet, that is, you big kidders you.

I've ordered, tried and returned a The One helmet (I love that Vegas Nights carbon thing, just brilliant) and a RockGdn job, but both have been incredibly tight across the face, and since I'll mostly be wearing it at Jump-y places, I want to be able to comfortably rip it on and off without leaving portions of my face in it.

My head must be large, I'm guessing, so it needs to be something with a bit of room. My current lid is the brown Giro one which has been brilliantly comfortable- their L is a 62-63cms I think- and that fits me perfectly, but I've never been happy with the ventilation on climbs and am ready to try something else. Plus, like the six-six-one lids, they look so fking ugly. What? I want to look nice, ok? These things matter- I just cant bring myself to waste money on something I don't fancy. Just ask my wife.

Anyway, what can anyone recommend? Is there a time when new designs of lid come out, as there is with bikes? I seem to have looked at everything already, and can see nothing I like/ or that will fit my massive gurning face.

So, in summary, help, please, thanks smile

I've got a MASSIVE dome. FF padding will give after a while, but the only lid I found that fitted in all the right places was a Troy Lee D2, sadly my head has expensive tastes...

I think it's a XL/XXL!

On the plus side the shells are smaller size-for-size than all other FF's so when I've got it on it don't look as freakishly big. It's the same size externally for example as my mates medium Fox.

They do change colour/graffics year on year, but the design hasn't (until the D3 comes out very soon) last years (or even the year before's) D2 would be exactly the same.

I found out with motor cycle helmets that it's not so much the size but the shape of your head that matters. I have a roundish head (looking down on it, that is) and found, eventually, that Bell helmets fitted me better than the Italian manufacturers helmets did which seem to be shaped for a narrower head. It could be that the same goes for mtb DH ones and I'm pretty sure that Bell do one for this which might be worth a try if you can find one. Troy Lees seem to be the most popular, but a bit pricey. There may be some of this years discounted around at the moment, worth looking at the mags. Both of my sons use these and they've taken some stick so well worth a look.

£139 for the composite D2 history from last year in Xl/XXL & L/XL that's a fricken sweet lid for a bargain price. 2010's are going to be £300 plus.

ps isn't that a motor-cross helmet, though? would I still have decent ventilation in that and would it be massively heavier?

Ive found a Troy Lee Lucha in xl/xxl, which is 60-62cms apparently. Does anyone know if Troy Lee lids come up big? The last few I've tried in this size was way tight across my face when putting on and taking off.

No - the D2, D2 carbon, and soon to be released D3 are all MTB helmets. The SE2 & Air are the MX offerings.

Unfortunately if you want to keep your lid on, its going to cook in a D2. Assuming the Giro you had was a Remedy, they have significantly more vents than the Troy Lee offerings.

Personally, if you can stomach the shape and size of the Giro (even if it looks like it comes from a NASA space suit), i'd stick with that. They are considered one of the best in terms of protection, whereas the Troy Lee an The offerings are considered some of the worst.

Ironic really, coming from a D2 owner! Soon to be replaced however. Not with a D3 for £500 though! The D3 is considerably bigger than the D2 to increase safety, it's nearly identical in size & weight to the MX helmet, the SE2, which is about £200 cheaper. Go figure.

Another advantage of sticking with the Giro is you know it fits your large head!

Thanks for the info and the really good points, that's ace thumbup

I still want a new thing though. I like buying a new thing frown

Isn't there anything Giro-esque in capacity and protection with more venting that isn't a Giro? I badly want a new thing smile

Is it bad that I made myself laugh typing it, too? Probably. Best not reply to that, actually.

Have a look at the new POC range? They are meant to be pretty tough?

The cheaper one of the two (~£150) is the more vented model, its just made of less exquisite materials (composite rather than carbon from memory).

Are they the space-men people? I looked on their website just the other day as I'd found a link to their full-face model which looked nice, but I cant seem to find anywhere in the UK that sells their stuff (the full face ones, anyway). Do you know of anywhere?

You may struggle to get one at the moment, as they are only just available. CRC will be doing them, and Biketart. I seem to recall JEJames will stock them also.

Definately worth a look though.

All the POC stuff is meant to be great, I'll certainly be getting some before I venture out again.

I use my D2 for DH duties and I did use it for the Kona Mash-Up, but I wouldn't climb or xc in it.

The few times I'm climbing / cruising with it, it's straped to my camelbak.

£500 for a D3! Sweet baby jesus and the orphans! It'll be good, but I CAN put a price on safety, even as something as inportant as my head.

The D2 is nye on full face perfection and better riders than me have slammed harder than me and never had one fail.

[unhelpful post alert]

I can't imagine the POC stuff being cheap. Their DH pads are the business, made with this wierd compound thats soft when compressed slowly but rigid when done quickly - i.e. in a smash. As a brand seems to be well designed stuff - eye-wateringly expensive mind. There's a POC shop in the high street in Chamonix. There's a girl there who is simply astonishing. She doesn't talk to me. Thats about it really. Neither do any of her friends. I'm just rambling now... you still reading this? erm move along now.

If you're looking at FF helmets, then the Specialized Deviant has plenty of vents. Very happy with mine.
