I've been thinking about ditching all my separate tools and investing in a Topeak multi-tool.
Initially thought the Alien II looked pretty good but is it worth spending the extra and getting the newer Alien III or a DX?
Looking for any comments as I'm now thoroughly confused.

I'm not sure what it's called. But I've got the tiny mini tool kit thing. It's really good, even if I do get ribbed by my mates for getting my 'tool compact' out.

Are the tools on it usable?

Yeah really good. The chain tool is better than you'll get on a multitool. The Allens are a bit short, but never failed me yet excellent quality too. The puncture repair kit and tyre leavers are useless though.

Surely the multitool is the sort of thing that you have when you're out on the trail rather than the main tool you'd use at home though?

Yes correct, but mine are one and the same. I have a water bottle with everything in
but the thinking was I could reduce the amount I carry whilst still having everything I need.

Oh yeah, I've got a lineline box at home. But instead of a multitool that gets all wet/dirty/rusty, well if you're a MTBer anyway, I've got one of these.

In the words of Clarkson, it's sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Not to mention weather proof enough to be in my Camelbak in Rain/Snow/Mud and on that rare occation, happy dust.

But, if you get one, open it, throw the glue, tyre levers and patches out and stick some Park levers and self-sticking patches in your Camlebak.

For you Roadies out there, it also comes with a strap/mount affair for your frames, so you can carry water in your water bottle.

I've got a mini 18+ which is tiny but has always served me well.

Mine's the Hexus 16 - seems fine after four years of on/off road use.

Only use for emergencies, though. Proper tools at home.

I have a Topeak Hex which whilst not as fully-featured as an Alien, has pretty much everything you'd need on the trail.
If it's serious enough to need any more tools you're probably walking home anyway...

With drunken access to ebay I bought an Alien II. It's quite bulky but seems to have everything I could possibly need on it.
Time will tell if it was a good idea or not!
