disc brakes ..do they need run in ?

Just built up a bike with new juicy 3 discs

been out a coupla times and the brakes are pretty pants
should I expect them to get better with miles or should I have degreased the discs before use ?(embarrassed smilie)

They do take a bit to bed in yeah.

The levers solid enough (i.e. dont need bleeding?)

I built a bike (Scott Scale 40) with Av1d Juicy 3's and they were fine from day 1 - did not need any major running in. I guess its just one of those things - sometimes they need it sometimes they don't. Did you assemble the brakes yourself or did they come in a ready made kit (i.e. all cables attached etc?). Give it a few runs but if they do not improve then perhaps look at the set up and adjustment.

A couple of decent rides with some heavy braking from reasonably high speed should bed in the pads as much as you'll need. Bleeding is probably a good idea, especially with the Juicys.

You do need to bed in new brake pads to get maximum life and performance out of them.

My juicy 5's were dire for a couple of weeks but once bedded in are freaking awesome.
I also tied the levers back to the bars overnight & that firmed up the pressure no end.

I put in some new pads recently for a weekend in the Peaks, and for the first few miles felt like I had no brakes! Some water/mud/sand, and they were soon up to scratch again. Yes, they do have a bedding in period.

I've had 2 sets of Juicy 5s that were both fine from the get-go, but improved with a short-ish bedding-in period.

Just got a bike with Hope X2s on it and they're pretty dire out of the box, so will be bedding those in asap.
