Bike rack for an E36 Coupe

Need some opinions as iv'e heard that the type of rack I require is prone to movement when cornering and just generally feels a bit unsafe. Don't want to spend more than about £60.00.

Don't bother, the coupe is ste for bike rack mounting - the boot lid doesn't have any where for you to mount the top straps.

I ran a roof rack on my E36 coupe when I had it - was brilliant and kept everything neat and tidy and the car in good condition.

I used the Thule bike rack system for the roof

If you up your budget a little, roofbox.co.uk are doing packages of Cruz roofbars and two bike carriers for £75.

Else Saris Bones seems to be the default choice for saloon boots if you must boot-mount - but a quick google shows people have had problems with it on the E36 coupe as the side straps can't go anywhere but where the top-straps go, so would be prone to movement and scratching. I'd imagine the same will apply to most other boot-mounts too.

Otherwise it's a towbar (can be a neat removable one of you like) and a rack which sits on it. You won't get that setup for £60 though.

I have a convertible and was wondering since the pic shows a similarity to the E36 Coupe / conv boot if the product below would be any good for me?

I am not a fan of rear mounted racks for long distances.

Regardless of how securely the boot rack is mounted to the car, the bike(s) will tend to swing around and this can scratch the paintwork under the straps/clips.

Also, if you have deep section or disc wheels you have to take them off the bike otherwise they push the bike up horizontal at speed.

As soon as can be bothered I'm getting rid of my boot rack and getting a proper roof rack.

Also, low mounted racks obscure the rear lights, so you should run a light board.......

I bought the Cruz ones, they are not very aerodynamic ! But for the money, quite solid and stable.

I've assembled them as a frame and so it's easy to put on/off the car.

I wouldn't leave a bike on them unattended though, it's only 4x screws to remove the whole roofrack.. no idea how good the locking covers are.
