I'm still using QRs, and have snapped a spoke and bent the rim on my Specialized XC, and most likely require a new wheel. I'd like something a little more heavy duty than an entry cross country rim to be able to handle my weight / clumsiness and over optimism.

An unexpected main dealer repair bill, and an oblitereated garden fence have spent every penny of the mat205125 Xmas savings, and therefore budget is an issue .... fund allocation must be prioritised to the essentials at the moment, however I'd rather have my bike working than have heating food or light smile

Very interesting to hear peoples experiences of different brands and retailers.

Please limit recommendations to a £150 ball park.

Anything made of at least reasonable quality components, BUILT WELL. The stock wheels on most bikes often fail on both counts.

A Shimano XT hub, DT Swiss Comp spokes and an XM719 rim from a decent LBS or Merlin Cycles will be well within budget, and do the job perfectly. Sorted.

I'd second the Merlin recommendation: XT hubs plenty good enough in budget.

thirded - and I'd suggest that if cash is tight, LX hub on XM519 is plenty tough enough.

maybe very slightly over budget, but you really cant beat the Hope pro 2 rear hub laced to a dt swiss 4.2. merlin built me one up some years ago. The hope hub is a lovely thing and will last a long, long time.

edit - just checked price. and comes in at £176.

Just been into the Chain Reaction Cycles site and priced up the following.

I'm planning to strip my bike to find out what else needs adding to the shopping list after a fun grind through the soaking wet Afan grit at the weekend, otherwise I'll be going for something like this.

Selected Items Any Additional Charges
Shimano XT Disc Hub Rear M756 32h Black 6-Bolt £0.00

Mavic XM719 Disc Rim 32h Black 26inch £15.00

DT Swiss Spokes Competition Stainless DB Black 2mm-1.8mm £5.00

DT Swiss Nipple Upgrade Alloy Anodized Gold Set - Single Wheel (Not UST) £9.99

Selected Package Price: £98.98

Gotta throw an extra tenner into the pot for gold nipples wink

Mavic D521 Ceramic on XT disc hub would probably be within budget.
