Recommend me a head-object collision protection device

I am an XCer, and having been given a roadie to look after recently, am now also a commuter, and have decided that my 5 year old generic Giro both does not cut it when I have two carbon-framed bikes, and considering the number of times I have dropped it, will probably not protect my nonce from the grill of a Scania or the sharpened rocks/punji sticks on my local trail.

My budget is at most £100, but quite shockingly, would prefer as little as possible! I dont have the advantage of a decent local bike shop, so may have to take advantage of distance selling regulations to find the best fit. My priority is keeping me cool, and looking good. Also preventing death.

i have a spesh echelon which is quite nice, well vented and it is a nice snug fit. cant go wrong for £40...

You REALLY want to try helmets on. I was just in my LBS and tried on a GIRO. It did not fit me at all and felt very uncomfortable, while I have, and was trying on new Specialized helmets too, all off which fitted my head perfectly. It makes a big difference. Many friends have the GIRO's and I'm sure they're good, but if it don't fit your not going to wear it.

With helmets, different makes may not suit. I tried a GIRO on and it really didn't sit right, it's just the wrong size for my head. Then tried a MET ultimatlite on and it fitted really well, is light and I wear it all the time having not been a helmet fan at all, I hardly notice it's there

Oh, and for those about supporting the LBS, I'm all for it, but I couldn't afford to spend the £30+ difference between the helmet online and the helmet in the LBS.....

You do really need to go and try them on. Even different models from the same company will fit differently. I used to have a Giro something or other. It was ok but not as good a fit as the Giro Hex that replaced it which is the best fitting helmet I have ever tried on. Try them on in a bike shop, you must have one not that far away, and then look online. Personaly I'd give the bike shop a chance to match the online price, or give you their best offer anyway as often they will come down in price to sway you away from online shopping.

As others say I'd say it's essential to try before you buy. I know you say you've not got a local shop, but a helmet is one of the things I always try before buying. My head shape suits MET and Giro helmets but not Specialized. Something that us on here find comfortable might not suit you, sort of like saddles but at least you can try a helmet on for size...
