So I am now using my bargain folding bike to get to work (4 miles - fairly flat).

I forgot to get a couple of spare innertubes to put in my saddlebag - I haven't purchased innertubes for some time - the wheel states : 20 X 1.50 (40-406).

Do I assume either of these will do the job?

and if so, should I go for the self sealing option - or are they just a gimmick?

Yes they're fine, and don't bother with the goo tubes. Keep your tyres in good order and you won't get punctures.
