Old & new bike advice

Hi guys,

I'm ashamed to say that I haven't been on a bike for 6 years now although I used to cycle 7 days a week back then.

I decided to dig my bike out and rekindle my love for it, however, I now find it too small to ride comfortably.

I am looking to get a new bike within the next month and have some questions. I'm looking at possibly getting a Scott Aspect 50 or 55. Does anyone have one? From what I can tell the only difference between the 2 is that the 55 has mechanical disc brakes and it's £40 more expensive. Are the discs worth the extra money?

I was going to order this weekend as tredz had a 15% sale but I've just noticed it's back up to full price again. Does anyone know if they have sales often or was it just a new year thing?

I'm hoping to spend no more than £400. Someone recommended a Specialized Hardrock disc instead. Any thoughts on which is better? I will mainly be doing cross country with some on road as well.

Now some advice on my old bike please and what to do with it. I thought about ebaying it but can't find any comparables to judge a price. It's a Sunn Totall Un soft tail but the problem is it's only a 15" frame so probably only appeals to a limited market of short people! Anyone got any idea on price? or if it's better to break it and sell the parts. Here's a pic:



Spec is - Manitou SXD forks, Sram gears, Magura HS33 front brake, Mavic rims with Deore hubs, DNA stem, Cane Creek headset, DMR handlebars. Needs a bit of tlc.

Any advice would be much appreciated! (sorry for the long post!)

first off, do not sell the sunn unless you really really need to. its a classic and will be well worth keeping for fun in the future. if you do need/want to sell it, head to the retro bikes website where they have a fetish for that kind of thing and you will get an honest buyer and a quicker sale.

as for new bikes, at that pricve they are much of the same regardless of which brand you buy. mechanical discs can work well but in my experience it was hard to set them up well. good quality v-brakes are just as good but naturally suffer in the rain/mud.

have a look on www.wiggle.co.uk for a focus. they are good bikes and tend to be a bit cheaper than the major brands like specialised and marin.

a £4-500 bike is about the start of sensible mtbs that wont let you down off road so whatever you buy will be up to the task...
