Good money after bad...
Discussion
Have an 04 epic, has done me well... and before yesterday it was in need of new front wheel, new chain, middle ring, cassette. But still very rideable. Went out yesterday, and chain snapped. fixed that, and 20 mins later, front forks collapse - out with the shock pump... not a chance.
So I tot up what was needed, and I am guessing around £500. Whats the bike worth? I am guessing £500!
So when do you stop thowing money at an old bike and go buy an orange 5, or similar...
Ho hum...

I doubt anyone will give you £500 for it, and then have to spend another £500 to fix it, depending on actual repair costs you might get £200 - £300 for it. its only worth as much as what someone is willing to pay for it. Better off selling it in bits.
I think that's what the OP is getting at, it's technically a write off. Hmm, hard to say isn't it. I've had one of my bikes for 3.5 years now, and I see these newer lighter/stronger/quicker/capable bikes in the shop and think why do I bother replacing things when they wear out! But I'm so tuned into mine, I can really shift on it now and I know it would take ages to dial that well into a new one.
If you do decide to change there's a pretty solid market for second-hand bike bits on eBay. I upgraded a few bits on my DH Bike and the old stuff went really well (not exactly a huge market for DH stuff ether).
If its a write off anyway then why not try fixing the forks yourself? Whar are they? You can probably get something online that'll help you sort them and the only tool you are likely to need that you won't have are circlip pliers. I'm sure if you shop around you can get it sorted for a lot less than £500.
Don't know what fork was on that bike, but have you found out how much a rebuild would cost? Mojo if it's a Fox or Tim Flooks for Rockshocks well worth a phone call and you'll most probably end up with a much better fork than you had before for not a lot of money. Rest of the stuff from ebay or try the sales at Chain Reaction or Merlin Cycles. You can buy them over a period of time. But, as has been said, you may be looking for a good excuse to get a new bike.......
Have to wait 'til monday to see if a 'deal' I have been working on comes in, if it does, then it's down the LBS to grab a rather nice looking Orange 5. Have managed to 'borrow' a pair of forks (old bombers) from a mate, and will stick these on the Epic as a temporary measure..so not all bad.
If I do get to strip (ooooerrrr) then will let you know. It is size M, which equates to 17.
Cheers
