Which hard tail cross country bike ?

to be honest, £2K is probably overkill. personally i would go for a scale as they are by far and away the most popular xc race bike around at the moment. http://www.evanscycles.com/products/scott/scale-30... 2010 bike for £2K though you mihgt get lucky with a 09 bike and grab a bargain?
other than that, the stumpy ht is a great bike and the comp carbon is £2k.

I'm sure Scotts and Specializeds are great bikes but £2k opens up a whole world of choice. What about something from Orange, or Cotic, or even a dialled PA. All lovely machines and certainly less mainstream.

Why a hard tail?
At your budget you should be able to pick up a decent full susser. In usual forum style, I am going to answer your question with an answer completely outside of your question. I've recently bought a full-sus XC bike. I'd been planning on building up a carbon frame HT bike, but friends who ride offroad (I've been exclusively a roadie for the last 6 years) steered me in the direction of a full-susser.
In my case (for slightly less than your budget) I ended up with a Scott Spark 40.

Quite a few of my mates have Scales and they are very nice. If I was to get a 4th bike it would be a lighweight XC hardtail and a scale would be up there. At £2k I assume you are looking at the scale 30. If you need a 17.5" one then these guys have last years 30 pretty cheap http://www.drakescycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1...
I personaly don't see the point in lightweight full sus XC bikes. I would always go for a HT. If you want to think about full sus I would be looking at fun bikes, Orange 5, Cannondale Prophet, Specialized Enduro/Pitch but these are very different bikes to the Scale

I'd go for the R8 over the P7 for that sort of money, or the Cotic Soul, as mentioned above.

My mate just picked up a new Carbon Stumpjumper for about 1800 squids ( closer to 2k on the ticket I think, but he haggled). I rode it on Friday - lovely lovely frame, lovely feel, it looks magic but let down by very ordinary components for that price range.
