I am going to build my own mountain bike, partly for the fun of the build so please no posts about buying a ready built one.

I have bought a second hand Orange Gringo frame, it is good condition bar some of the paintwork has reacted due to the wrong bolts being fitted.
What are peoples opinions on having it repainted or keeping it as original as possible bearing in mind that nothing is going to be of the original spec.
The frame is metallic blue but i would like it flat black with all black wheels etc

Lastly what are your thoughts on components? It is a hardtail and i would like it reasonably light but it is on a budget and going to be done slowly and bit by bit as and when i can afford it.
It will have suspension forks, disc front brake, hopefully a disc rear.

Any thoughts would be appreciated as this is my first build.

I guess it depends on how bad the reacting is and how nice you want it to look, as well as whether you plan to sell it on in the future. I haven't heard of the frame so I don't know what sort of money it's worth but if you're not planning on selling and you want it to look nice, then go ahead and paint it, on the other hand, if you want a budget build or to sell it on, keeping the original paint might be worthwhile, it's going to get knocks anyway if you ride it properly hehe

I'd repaint it any colour you like - it is going to be your bike after all.

Plenty of companies out there, depending on where you are in the country. I'd budget a bottom end of £75 to get it done reasonably. Orange themselves do a respray service, I sent my P7 back to them about 6 years ago and they did a great (if expensive job) - need it doing again now as it is to be a singlespeed and it has seen a lot of use. Orange want ~£150 but that would be to pretty much strip back to the bare metal and put it on the production line again for repainting - plus all correct decals.

I'm currently trying to work out which company to use for the respray.

ETA - as for components, ebay really is your friend. If you're patient you'll turn up all sorts of goodies.

Excellent, thanks, i didnt know about singletrack so will be keeping an eye on it to see what turns up.
It will be a slow build anyway so i can afford to wait for decent parts.
I think i will get it painted in my own colour choice as i wont be building it to original spec anyway.
Should i get wheels first, then a seat and post and then see how long a bar stem i need to get it all to fit me right?
Dont really know what to buy first!

Buy whatever parts turn up first in the classifieds. You need to write up a list of the bits you need. As for stem and handlebars (like saddles) you'll have to try to see what suits you. I would recommend you start off with a 70mm stem and a medium rise bar and see how that feels.

I'd be more worried about the the paint / frame reacting to 'the wrong bolts being fitted'. I've not heard of that before. I've used ali, alloy, steel and ti bolts on ali and steel frames without issue.

Powdercoating is a good alternative to stove enamel or car paint.

I did wonder myself about the reacting paint, it was just what i was told by a bike shop and took it with a pinch of salt anyway.
I have been thinking about powder coating and thanks for the advise on the bars.
