My brother in law has been on at me for a while to go tubeless on my mtbs and over the weekend i finally gave in, and converted my Orange 5.

He converted long ago and is so convinced by the merits of the system that he wrote a blog about it http://rwhitemedia.co.uk/2009/03/06/ghetto-tubeles... . He gave me a hand broadly following the blog, and in not very long at all we were done. Couldn't really be simpler.

Big fan of tubeless but people I know who have gone ghetto tubeless have had limited success.
Good on you for getting it to work!

Yup, Ghetto tubeless is pretty good. Probably not quite as easy to use at a proper UST rim and tyre but still good and a lot cheaper. Now get out and ride them!
My only tip from running tubeless is don't listen to the masses when they say you can run lower pressures. Its true but I found it was not be best thing to do. I found that going tubeless ment that the tyre was deforming more when it hit bumps than it would with a tube in (at the same pressures). This ment that I could either run the same pressure as before but gain grip, or run higher pressures and loose rolling resistance while retaining the level of grip from the tubed settup. If I ran tubeless at a lower pressures the tyre was rolling around all over the place when hitting berms or cornering hard, even worse than it would be with a tube in there. To me going tubeless and lowering the pressure is just moving from one negative to another but I would encourage you to experiment.

I'm fairly hefty and have never liked running low pressures. I like my tyres to be quite hard. I just hate the squirming about that lower pressures result in.

My main reason for going with this method is the supposed puncture resistance that it offers. Time will tell i suppose.

They certainly puncture less. Snake bite puncture are pretty much done away with and if you run seatent then thorns and the like aren't much of a problem either.

Does depend on the tyre. A tyre that is designed to be tubeless will be stronger and more rigid (or should be, mine are).... and more expensive!

I have only ever run UST tyres tubeless. I have seen too many people faffing about trying to get non UST tyres to seal to bother with them.
