Getting a speed-dependent clicking noise when rolling, so took the cassette off and loosened the axle - the freehub has about 2mm of play in all directions

Is this normal? It only goes away if I tighten the cones right up, which doesn't seem right. It's a Shimano fitting I think, are they typically in stock at a LBS ?

That does not sound to cool. A LBS can order you a replacement shimano freehub,

years ago I wore out a LX one and the wheel was cool, however I was on a budget, so fitted a new one, not hard to do if you have the tools and the know how.

I would recommend that you check the hub bearings (if loose bearing and cones) are ok and the races are fine, otherwise it might be worth replacing the hub complete and having the wheel rebuilt.

I think I paid about £20 for a new freehub.

Its fked. Pull the hub apart, see what's worn and what isn't. Get a new freehub while you're at it, they're only cheap.
