OK, so I am doing it for the fist time this year.

I am 25 and reasonably fit, my training so far has consisted of a 12 mile commute to work for the last 3ish weeks (I have missed a couple of days due to sleep). I am doing it with a team from work, and talking to some of the guys that did it last year they take it quite slowly and relaxed (one guy did it in just under 5hours) that got me thinking that 1 hour to do 10 miles is VERY slow. I do my 12 mile commute (quite hilly) in around 30 mins.

What kind of times are all you pros planning on doing it in?

You sure about that? it would mean you're averaging approx 24mph. That's pretty damn fast. most fit cyclists when commuting would be averaging about 17-19mph.

54miles so it's racing down there.

Not got a lift back either so I'll be either cycling back or cycling across to a train station somewhere away from Brighton.

Google Maps says 12 miles, although I do take a slightly different route, so it could be a little less. Maybe more like 10/10.5.

I'm overjoyed I've recently been managing around 18 on average, but there always seem to be a few blokes in full lycra on Specializeds that come past me each morning like I'm standing still.

Oh, god, yes. Addlestone - Wimbledon. Treacherous peaks. Walton has snow all year round.

if your reasonably fit there is no way your riding at an average of 24mph especially in a hilly area, you must be suppppppppppppppppppper fit.

To answer the OP, the time all depends on how much traffic you encounter/what time you leave. If you're not in the early batches through the gates I think that anyone would struggle to do it in less than 3 1/2 hours.

I haven't done the ride many times, but one of the villages (can't remember the name) can become almost gridlocked with bikes later on in the day, adding at least 20 minutes on to the ride.
