Please forgive the level of basicness, but I'm new to all this.

My brand new bike's bottom bracket looks like this on the left side...

Is it supposed too? It looks 'unfinished' somehow, especially as the frame isn't painted. Is there supposed to be a coverplate or something there?

Looks fine, it's a sealed cartridge type BB, like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Par...

The indentations you see will accept the tool used to install/remove the BB, they're not for a cover or cap of any kind. The shell end remains unpainted because it has probably been faced in anticipation of an external BB (different type to yours) being fitted. Also, don't be alarmed by what looks like a thread or two sticking out.

Thanks, every day is an education!

This is the first time I've bought a brand new bike, so unsure about what to look for!

So much for a tiny teaser picture - how about a full pic of your new toy?
