Just bought a Scott Genius 50...

...and made a right prat of myself!

The bloke from Evans rang me today and said it's in can I pick it up, so I said yeah but could you take off those little pedals with the cleats and put normal ones on please. When I get to the shop he brings the bike downstairs and it has these strange looking wide chrome things on it and I say, very confidently "No mate, I don't want them things, I want the normal pedals." The two blokes exchange a quick glance and one says "No, these are the ones everybody wants, we put them on specially so you'd have the best."

Ah, right, cheers then.

Picture here of the bike is the second ride out which I did last night. It was still over 80 degrees when I got back to my apartment after 10pm. But, I did ride over the George Washington Bridge for the first time.

Spending the first few rides on the paths and roads to get used to the pedals. I toppled over just at the entrance to the GWB last night and someone stopped to help while I was squirming on the floor.

Hobo - been looking at the Scott Genius as plenty of people were riding it in the Passporte Du Soleil I cycled in last weekend in Switzerland. You happy with it..??

I love it but being out of riding for so long I really don't know enough to give you an informed review. From reading around the specs look good and the 2009 onwards has changes in the geometry to make it better than previous. The main driving factor for me was that I could get it for $1800 and comparing it to other bikes at the same price point the Scott came out on top.

It's about 28llbs so not the lightest bike around but for an XC it isn't bad. The rear suspension is meant to be a bit "snappy" but I have not felt that. I do love the remote lock out though as you can have partial and full lock out on the rear. Still only 30 miles into ownership as it is 95 degrees outside and goes dark so bloody early here. I'm looking forward to the long weekend we have coming up so that I can get some dirt on it, then obsessively clean it.

So have I, (stole my original quote form elsewhere)and I am still getting used to the pedals. Not being helped by having a broken foot as well.

In that pic the saddle is pointing up a bit, that is how mine came but I've adjusted flat. Is it normal to have it at that angle?

It's something I am going to play with. At the moment I am just riding on the roads and it can sometimes feel like I am slipping off. However, the seat post came greased up so as I ride it slips down and my knees end up being more and more bent so I am adjusting that first.

Only 30 miles in to ownership so it is all a learning experience for me

Remove the seatpost, wipe off the grease so there is only the tiniest amount of grease smeared and that should fix it... be careful not to simply tighten up the bolt and extra turn.

I have mine pointed slightly down at the front. I find that my lower back doesn't get strained so much if my pelvis is tilted forwards slightly.

What pedals are they out of interest?

Done. Will try it again tonight and see how it goes. Not sure about the pedals but I think they are basic Shimano ones. I have included a couple of pictures to help identify them. I appologise for the crap quality and light but they are from my blackberry.

Mine is 2009 hence white. 2010 is black over here. Went out for another ride over the weekend taking the total mileage to 50. Changed the seat position to parallel with the ground and it made a huge difference. Now getting used to the pedals as well. Just got to rehydrate. Didn't notice there is nowhere to put a bottle on it when I bought the bike so going to have to try a Camelback. Ordered one for $30 and should be here soon.

Not going out tonight as it is currently 105 degrees outside!
