Bridleways in Wales, Scotland, Lake District

Wondering if you guys can clear something up for me.
I have ridden MTB's for as long as I can remember and do not ride on footpaths shown on OS maps as know the rules. Or at least thought I did. Bridleways are obviously fair game but I have heard about this right to roam thingy which i think applies more to Scotland than England and Wales. Do you still have to stick to bridleways on an MTB in Scotland or are you now allowed more access than previously?
I'll stick to bridleways/tracks but sometimes wonder what damage an MTB really does, especially to places like in the lakes where they have heavily armoured the footpaths anyway, just guess they dont want accidents with people crashing in to walkers/other users.
