hybrid recommendations

Yeah a what hybrid bike for around £500 thread.

Look away now if you don't like these.

I would aim to buy from a LBS but was wondering what other suggestions people have or makes to avoid. Just in case one of the local shops recommends something I like the shiny paint of but conceals a frame I should avoid.

I'm rather enamoured of Specialized bikes. I bought the basic Crossroads version some 15 years ago, which I'm still using but I've recently decided I fancy a suspended fork and disk brakes for a change, as well as slightly fatter tyres (I'm a fat knacker and put a lot of weight through my wrists which are complaining these days). So I've homed-in on a Spec Crosstrail Expert. It'll be the last bike I buy in all likelihood, so I'm not averse to spending a bit on one this time round.

I'll keep my Crossroads though. It doesn't owe me anything, it's well looked-after, and I might tempt Mrs Mars out for a day. She doesn't think there's any point in my spending money on a new bike for her, so this is the solution (must add Mrs Mars is the shape of a racing snake and doesn't need the exercise - I just want the company).

As like me you are not on the cycle to work scheme, I can recommend the Carerra Subway 1

I got mine in Halfords sale for iirc £190, cycle 10miles / day on it, longer trips on the weekend, London to Brighton and it does everything I want of it with little fuss.

otherwise, there are a few Specialized Sirrus' around for sale second hand for around the £200 mark.

I currently ride a Focus Arriba Courier, hybrid. Excellent geometry with good components, very quick and fairly forgiving.

in side your £500 mark too.

Had a Trek Hybrid 7100 for years now. Never had a problem with it during the 100's of miles it's so far racked up. Managed to get a 'last years model' from Evans so that saved £80+ quid in itself.
