SPD pedal Help

Hello all,

Some help. My Wellgo SPD pedals have died on my MTB and i have realised that you can't repair them as to do so kills the weather seals on them, great effing idea that is. So now have a bike without pedals.

Am looking at either of these but leaning towards the Xpedo ones as well, they just look better.

Any one got any advice or other help. Don't really want to spend more than £50.

No idea on the non Shim pedals, but I've had M540s for years and they're ace. The next model up is a bit lighter, but that's always seemed like a very false economy on an MTB unless you happen to be a complete weight weenie.

Cheers. Not to worried about weight, weigh 14stone already so a few grams here and there won't help.

Another shout for M540s here too... Mine have been bashed more times than I can remember and still clip in and out smooth as silk.

No, but in 7 years I've not needed to.

Merlin are doing 520's for twenty quid...

I've had the same pair of M520s on various commuter hacks for five years and they're still going strong. For £20 you can't go wrong.

Get the cheapest Shimano ones you can find, they're pretty much bomb-proof. You'll be hard pushed to notice any actually difference in use compared with the more expensive ones. I've got everything from the cheapest OEM ones through to XT, and can't tell them apart once I'm riding.

Wiggle have the 520s for £20 also, in white black or silver.

Is there much difference between the 520 and 540 apart from the spindle shape and ££?

Nope. The slightly higher up the range ones are attached with an allen key rather than a wrench (which is a tad easier and less likely to scuff your crank) but that's it.

I use 540s on my MTB and XTR SPDs on my road bike.

All the shimano pedals can be easily stripped and serviced, you may need a special tool but it's only about £4.

520's are wrench or allen key.

Another +1, the only SPD pedal I use (when I'm not riding flats). I bought a few pairs at the Hub at Glentress when they were selling them for £15 inc cleats - I think they'd replaced the SPDs on their new fleet of hire bikes with flats and were selling them off. Bargain.

I'm too tight to buy the higher models when the M520's work so well.

I went and got the 520's for $20. They lOok solid and well put together.
Test ride tomorrow.

Just remember the release tension can be adjusted within quite a large range, worth playing around with. Good for me as I still suffer the effects of a twice-strained right ankle ligaments, hence am able to run with less tension on that pedal compared to the left.
