Who rides 'em and what d'you think of them?

I've been on Shimano SPD's up until now and they do the job, but I've been thinging of changing for a few reasons. Occasionally I get a twinge that feels as though my foot would prefer to be clipped in at a different angle. I'd also like something that was easier to clip in/out for sliding through corners (to get your inside foot out) and balance on techical stuff. Aslo when I ride some of the bigger faster stuff, my Specialized xc style shoes, combined with the SPDs are not too comfortable (so some new shoes are also on the cards).

However, although I know quite a few people who ride Crank Bros pedals - and rave about them - I also have seen their pedals fail on four occasions; two where the body came clean off the axle; and two where the axle snapped off the crank. Not so good...

Any opinions?

hi, I ride Crank Bros Candies in my road bike, Egg Beater TI's on my Mountain bike, and have been using them for about 5 years now. So far ( and please dont let this be the curse) I haven't had a single problem with them. I've had a few falls, and always been able to unclip. I have never tried any other brands, so really cant offer any kinds of comparison.

Thanks. What sort of mtb stuff do you do? XC, DH, Freeride? And what shoes?

You can adjust the cleat angles on your shoes but the general guide is to set them true and the float should be enough to suit your knee/ankle geometry.

Well, ideally (and if the shoe allows for it) you set the cleats so that they point straight ahead when your foot dangles at its natural angle.

FWIW, I've run with Time ATAC pedals for many years as I don't get on with SPDs due to dodgy knees. ATACs have a lot more float in angle and side-to-side movement, which takes the pressure off your knees.

I've been told that CB pedals are also better than the standard SPD in this respect. I also notice that a lot of downhill riders use them with a sort of hybrid clipless/flat pedal, like the 'Mallet' type:

I used to ride with Malletts, only gave up with them when my wife wanted to try clipping in - the huge platform does mean they are easy to use when you feel the need to unclip.
in response to your earlier question, i mostly ride XC, cannock chase being my local trail. As for shoes i wear Specialized Tahoes as they were the first pair i ever tried, and fit really well.

Cheers

Rob
